TIER IV, Renesas Build Open AI-Native Computing Platform

TIER IV will adopt Renesas R-Car Gen 5 as a primary Autoware reference platform, building an open AI-native computing platform for SDVs spanning Level 2+/2++ through Level 4 autonomy.

TIER IV will adopt Renesas’ R-Car Gen 5 as one of the primary reference computing platforms for Autoware, under a collaboration to build an open AI-native computing platform for software-defined vehicles spanning Level 2+/2++ driver assistance through Level 4 autonomy. The two companies will pair TIER IV’s autonomous driving software and reference AI models with next-generation automotive system-on-chips from Renesas Electronics Corporation, a partnership TIER IV says it initiated to expand the open ecosystem around Autoware. The stated aim is an open hardware and software platform that supports the continuous evolution of AI-powered vehicles.

Highlights

  • R-Car Gen 5 becomes a primary Autoware reference platform, with TIER IV porting and optimizing the open-source stack onto the SoC family.
  • Scope spans Level 2+/2++ ADAS through Level 4 autonomous driving on a common computing platform.
  • First public demonstration runs on R-Car X5H at Automotive World 2026, September 9–11 at Makuhari Messe.
  • Beyond current SoCs, TIER IV is developing AI accelerators for transformer-based driving AI plus LiDAR and 4D radar sensing.

Why Integrated AI Compute Now

TIER IV frames the collaboration against the shift toward software-defined vehicles, where capability is set by software, AI, and high-performance computing rather than fixed-function hardware alone. End-to-end AI models are emerging as a foundation for autonomous driving at the same time automotive computing platforms are evolving to carry heavier AI workloads. Production-ready autonomous driving, the company argues, requires tight integration across AI software, system software, and the processors underneath. As the key developer of Autoware, TIER IV says it approached Renesas to widen that open ecosystem.

How Will Autoware Run on R-Car Gen 5?

The collaboration breaks into three workstreams. The first establishes an open reference platform: TIER IV adopts R-Car Gen 5 as one of its primary reference computing platforms for Autoware and future AI-native autonomous driving technologies, with both companies jointly optimizing and promoting the combined hardware-software stack to automakers and Tier 1 suppliers.

The second covers the porting work itself. TIER IV will optimize Autoware on R-Car Gen 5 SoCs and plans to deploy its reference AI models — end-to-end autonomous driving AI models — on the same silicon. Running conventional autonomous driving software alongside AI-native driving models on a shared computing platform is intended to produce solutions that scale from today’s production driver-assistance systems up to future Level 4 systems.

Silicon and Sensing Beyond R-Car

The third workstream looks past current-generation automotive SoCs. TIER IV is developing AI accelerators optimized for transformer-based autonomous driving AI, along with next-generation sensing technologies including LiDAR and 4D radar. The release does not tie those efforts to a specific timeline or product.

Automotive World Demonstration

TIER IV plans to show Autoware and its reference AI models running on Renesas’ R-Car X5H at Automotive World 2026, held September 9–11 at Makuhari Messe in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The demonstration is positioned to show open autonomous driving software, AI-native driving models, and automotive-grade computing operating on a unified platform.

Executive Commentary

“SDVs require more than just powerful AI models,” said Shinpei Kato, founder and CEO of TIER IV. “They also require computing platforms that allow those models to run efficiently, safely and at scale in production vehicles. We are excited to deepen our collaboration with Renesas to build an open AI-native computing platform by combining Autoware, our reference AI models and Renesas’ next-generation R-Car automotive SoCs. We will continue expanding the open-source ecosystem centered on Autoware while accelerating the deployment of scalable autonomous driving solutions from Level 2+/2++ to Level 4.”

“We are delighted to evolve the relationship with TIER IV into a full business collaboration,” said Aish Dubey, VP and Head of SoC Division of Renesas Electronics Corporation. “R-Car Gen 5 represents our vision for a new generation of automotive computing, where software, AI and vehicle intelligence must work together on a common platform. With our collaboration with TIER IV, we are helping bring that vision to life.”
