BMW Maps with Driver Assistance will launch in October 2026 on BMW vehicles running the BMW Operating System X, combining route guidance, the vehicle’s surroundings, and driver assistance information in a single 3D view on the central display. The BMW Group says the display lets drivers see the next navigation step alongside how the vehicle perceives its environment and which assistance functions are supporting the driving task. BMW developed the feature in-house and uses navigation data and map technology from partner Mapbox.

What Does the Integrated 3D View Show?
The display positions the driver’s own vehicle precisely within its lane and at the correct road level, according to the company. BMW says this aids navigation on highways, at intersections, and in city traffic, while making assisted and semi-automated driving easier to understand in the context of the current driving situation.
The integrated display draws on BMW’s new generation of driver assistance systems working with the BMW Operating System X. The company reports that the feature combines precise map information, vehicle sensors, and artificial intelligence.
How Does It Work With Highway Assistant?
BMW says the integration matters most when driver assistance systems support the vehicle over long distances or in complex traffic. The Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving on highways at speeds up to 81 mph (130 km/h), controlling both longitudinal and lateral movement. The system supports automated lane changes after the driver confirms with a glance.
With active route guidance through BMW Maps, the company says the system provides support from the highway on-ramp through to the exit. BMW’s Highway Assistant received the first DCAS approval in Germany under UN Regulation No. 171 last year.
Urban Semi-Automated Driving From 2027
BMW characterizes the interplay between navigation and driver assistance as increasingly important in urban areas. Starting in 2027, BMW models equipped with the Operating System X will begin rolling out navigation-guided, semi-automated driving in city environments, initially in Germany.
The BMW Maps feature with driver assistance is available only in combination with Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant in select countries, cities, and roads. BMW notes that rollout is occurring in phases and that the availability, scope, and system limitations of both assistants may vary by country.
