Waymo Expands: Four Cities in 2024

Waymo is set to transform urban mobility by extending its fully autonomous ride-hailing service to the public across four major cities within the year. This development marks a significant leap towards making self-driving technology a commonplace aspect of daily life. Starting from March 14, select members of the public in Los Angeles will have the first taste of this innovative service, following a successful initiation of rider-only testing in Austin.

Key Highlights:

  • Launch in Los Angeles and Austin: Waymo’s expansion into Los Angeles and Austin.
  • Free Initial Rides in LA: Beginning with free services, transitioning to paid.
  • Extensive Testing: Over 10 million miles driven autonomously across cities.
  • Community Integration: High user satisfaction and integration into daily activities.
  • Safety and Comfort: Emphasis on achieving rigorous safety standards.

During a session at SXSW, Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo, emphasized the transition from a futuristic dream to a practical solution, “Once an unimaginable future, autonomous driving is now a real-world way of getting around for tens of thousands of people each week.” The service is not only about convenience but also safety, comfort, and an enjoyable experience for its users.

Los Angeles Initiatives: Los Angeles users will enjoy rides within a 63 square mile area, eventually moving to a paid model after starting with free rides. More than 50,000 people are already on the waitlist, with plans to gradually onboard them, alongside distributing temporary codes at local events. The Waymo Driver has been thoroughly evaluated in LA over the past year, with users rating their experiences highly, averaging 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Austin’s Journey: Austin’s coverage includes a 43 square mile area, focusing on a phased approach starting with Waymo employees. The city holds historical significance for Waymo, being the location for its pioneering public autonomous ride. The expansion strategy involves community engagement and safety-driven development, supported by over 10 million miles of autonomous driving and extensive simulation data.

Waymo’s initiative represents a significant advancement in autonomous vehicle technology, promising enhanced urban mobility options. Interested residents in Los Angeles and Austin are encouraged to join the waitlist and experience the future of transportation.
