Volkswagen, Qualcomm Partner on Software-Defined Vehicle Tech

Volkswagen Group and Qualcomm signed an LOI for Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions powering SDV architecture and automated driving development through the CARIAD-Bosch Automated Driving Alliance.

Volkswagen Group and Qualcomm Technologies have signed a Letter of Intent for a long-term supply agreement covering advanced infotainment and connectivity systems. The partnership positions Qualcomm as Volkswagen’s primary technology provider for its zonal software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture, with high-performance system-on-chips (SoCs) scheduled for deployment beginning in 2027.

Highlights

  • Qualcomm will supply Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions for Volkswagen’s SDV architecture developed through the Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies (RV Tech) joint venture.
  • The collaboration extends to the Automated Driving Alliance (ADA), the CARIAD-Bosch initiative developing highly automated driving systems using Snapdragon Ride Elite.
  • Next-generation vehicles will integrate Snapdragon 5G Modem RF and V2X technology for real-time communication and ultra-fast connectivity.
  • SDV architecture will debut in the ID.EVERY1 and all future electric vehicles on the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).

SDV Architecture and Central Computing

The SDV architecture employs high-performance modular central computers to manage all vehicle functions. This design enables over-the-air updates for infotainment and highly automated driving features, allowing continuous enhancement of vehicle capabilities throughout the ownership period.

Volkswagen’s RV Tech joint venture with Rivian Automotive will leverage the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform to deliver immersive digital experiences. The platform supports agentic AI-driven features including personalized climate and seating adjustments, optimized routing, and multimodal voice and gesture controls.

Automated Driving Alliance Development

The Automated Driving Alliance, formed by CARIAD and Bosch in partnership with Volkswagen Group, will utilize Snapdragon Ride Elite for automated driving development. Qualcomm positions Ride Elite as its most powerful automotive compute platform.

The ADA’s objective centers on creating an AI-based highly automated driving system that scales across brands and model lines while maintaining full SDV compatibility. The end-to-end AI architecture delivers ultra-low latency for sensor processing and real-time decision-making.

Strategic Implications for Volkswagen Group

Volkswagen characterizes the agreement as part of a broader procurement consolidation strategy aimed at expanding semiconductor and AI integration expertise. The partnership addresses the increasing contribution of infotainment and driver assistance systems to overall vehicle value.

Karsten Schnake, Member of the Board of Management for Procurement at Volkswagen Passenger Cars, stated the collaboration delivers “greater efficiency, stability, and predictability” in the supply chain while strengthening technology development capabilities.

AUDI AG and Volkswagen Passenger Cars are currently driving the intended supply agreement forward with the goal of achieving Group-wide implementation.

Qualcomm’s Automotive Portfolio

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis encompasses multiple product lines relevant to the partnership:

  • Snapdragon Cockpit Platform: Powers infotainment and digital cockpit experiences
  • Snapdragon Ride Elite: High-performance compute for automated driving systems
  • Snapdragon 5G Modem RF: Enables ultra-fast cellular connectivity
  • V2X Technology: Facilitates vehicle-to-everything communication

The companies indicated plans to explore additional development opportunities in AI-driven technologies for safety, personalization, and intelligent mobility applications.
