Pony AI Inc., a global leader in autonomous driving technology, has secured a permit from Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works to test its Level 4 Robotaxi. This exciting development also marks the opening of Pony AI’s first European research and testing hub in Luxembourg. It’s a big step forward for the company, which is already testing its self-driving technology in countries like China, the United States, and South Korea. Now, Luxembourg joins the list, supporting Pony AI’s mission to make transportation safer and more efficient worldwide.
Key Highlights:
- Pony AI receives permit for Level 4 Robotaxi testing in Luxembourg.
- Establishes first European research and testing hub in Luxembourg.
- Partners with Emile Weber, a top Luxembourg transportation company.
- Expands global reach, adding Luxembourg to existing permits in China, US, and South Korea.
- Focuses on safer, more efficient autonomous mobility.
The Level 4 Robotaxi permit means Pony AI can test vehicles that drive themselves without a human driver in certain situations. This is a key move toward bringing self-driving taxis to the public on a larger scale. The company is working hard to perfect this technology, and Luxembourg’s support is a vital part of that journey.
To make this happen in Europe, Pony AI has teamed up with Emile Weber, a major player in Luxembourg’s transportation world. With experience in buses, taxis, and rentals, Emile Weber will help Pony AI adapt its tech to European roads and rules. This partnership is a perfect blend of cutting-edge innovation and local know-how.
Dr. James Peng, Pony AI’s Co-founder and CEO, shared his excitement: “Pony.ai is honored to be among the first companies awarded a permit for autonomous vehicle testing in Luxembourg. Luxembourg’s central location and forward-thinking regulations make it an ideal spot for our European base.” Meanwhile, Luxembourg’s Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, added: “The issuance of the testing permit marks an important milestone for the future of mobility. We’re thrilled to back companies like Pony AI in transforming how we get around.”
Pony AI has been busy in Europe this year. In March 2024, it signed an agreement with Luxembourg’s government to explore self-driving solutions. By September, it set up its European division there, and in October, it joined forces with Emile Weber to start testing. These steps show Pony AI’s commitment to growing its presence in the region.
Since starting in 2016, Pony AI has spread its wings across China, Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East. The company’s Virtual Driver technology combines software, hardware, and services to create self-driving vehicles ready for mass production. It’s all about making transportation easier and more accessible for everyone.
The new Pony.ai Europe hub in Luxembourg will drive the company’s research efforts in the region. On the other side of the partnership, Emile Weber brings nearly 150 years of experience, offering top-notch travel and mobility services with a modern fleet that includes electric vehicles.
