The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO), in partnership with Policing Lab, has launched a pilot program for the nation’s first autonomous patrol vehicle. Known as the Police Unmanned Ground vehicle (PUG) Patrol Partner, the initiative debuted in Miami-Dade County as part of a program developed and sponsored by Policing Lab.

A Technological Force Multiplier
The PUG combines advanced autonomy from Perrone Robotics with AI-driven analytics, real-time crime data, and a suite of advanced sensors. Its role is to extend deputy resources, improve operational efficiency, and enhance public safety. Marjolijn Bruggeling, Executive Director of Policing Lab, described the program as offering law enforcement a “smart high-tech partner in the field.” The vehicle is intended to increase situational awareness and automate repetitive tasks, allowing deputies to concentrate on the complex, human aspects of policing.
Community Engagement and Pilot Program
During the pilot period, the PUG will be assigned to the MDSO’s Community Affairs Bureau. The vehicle will appear at public events, where Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and her team will collect feedback from residents. A community-facing tablet powered by Truleo’s TruAssist application is also incorporated into the pilot, providing a direct way for the public to engage with the PUG and share their input.

Sheriff Cordero-Stutz stated that Miami-Dade continues to lead in public safety innovation. She emphasized that the PUG allows the department to explore how new technology can keep people safe while optimizing resources, noting that deputies remain central to the mission. The 12-month pilot will evaluate outcomes such as improved response times, deterrence, officer safety, and public trust. The results will guide the potential expansion of the program, which could serve as a national model for other law enforcement agencies.
