Guident and FAU Enhance Urban Mapping

Guident and FAU’s I-SENSE collaborate on urban mapping, using AV sensor data to create digital twins, enhancing infrastructure planning and autonomous vehicle safety.

Guident Corp., a leading autonomous vehicle (AV) teleoperation company, has partnered with Florida Atlantic University’s Sensing Institute (I-SENSE) to advance urban mapping technologies. This collaboration aims to improve infrastructure planning and transportation systems in urban environments by leveraging data from AVs equipped with cutting-edge sensors. The initiative is set to redefine urban mobility and enhance the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles.

Key Highlights

  • Innovative Urban Mapping: Uses data from AVs’ advanced sensors, including lidar, radar, and high-resolution cameras.
  • Digital Twins Creation: Generates virtual models mirroring physical urban structures and dynamic conditions.
  • Enhanced Decision-Making: Provides actionable data for stakeholders to optimize infrastructure and transportation systems.
  • Academic-Industry Synergy: Combines I-SENSE’s research expertise with Guident’s industry innovation.
  • Future Funding Opportunities: Explores monetization strategies to expand the project’s impact.

The project harnesses data collected from autonomous vehicles fitted with high-resolution video cameras, lidar, radar, and other sensing technologies. As these vehicles navigate urban routes, they capture detailed environmental data, which is processed to create “Digital Twins”—virtual replicas of city structures and conditions. These digital models offer real-time, actionable insights for public and private stakeholders, enabling advanced analysis, simulation, and management of urban infrastructure. This approach promises to streamline decision-making and boost operational efficiency in urban planning.

I-SENSE, a hub for FAU’s research in sensing and smart systems, plays a pivotal role in this collaboration. Supported by initiatives like the NSF ERC for Smart Streetscapes (CS3), I-SENSE brings expertise in sensing, computing, AI, and wireless communication. This partnership merges academic research with Guident’s proprietary technology, fostering innovation in urban analytics and autonomous vehicle applications.

Dr. Dennis Morgen, VP at Guident, emphasized the project’s potential: “This collaboration exemplifies the power of combining academic innovation with industry expertise to chart new pathways for urban mobility.” Similarly, Jason Hallstrom, executive director of I-SENSE, noted, “Partnering with Guident allows us to translate our academic insights into transformative real-world applications.”

Looking forward, Guident and I-SENSE are exploring funding and monetization strategies to scale the project’s scope. This initiative not only advances urban analytics but also supports sustainable growth in the autonomous vehicle sector, positioning both organizations at the forefront of smart city innovation.
