Waymo’s expansion into Japan is a pivotal step forward. Teaming up with GO, a top taxi platform, and Nihon Kotsu, Tokyo’s largest taxi operator, the company is customizing its technology to meet Japan’s distinct transportation needs. Soon, Nihon Kotsu drivers will hit the streets of wards like Minato, Shinjuku, and Shibuya, manually driving Waymo vehicles to create detailed 3D maps. These maps will power a simulation environment, helping engineers adapt the system to local traffic patterns and road conditions.
Preparations have been thorough. Nihon Kotsu set up a dedicated depot, while Waymo trained teams from both partners on autonomous fleet management. Community outreach has also smoothed the path for this rollout. On April 10, 2025, a launch event at Takanawa Gateway City showcased Waymo’s vehicles, with Yoichi Kise, President of East Japan Railway Company, as the guest of honor.
Speakers shared their excitement. Ichiro Kawanabe, Chairman of GO, said, “I was amazed there was no one in the driver’s seat. This technology can ensure mobility for Japan’s aging population.” Nicole Gavel of Waymo noted, “This is our first venture on international public roads, showcasing 15 years of Expertise.” Looking ahead, Waymo aims to enhance safety and mobility, collaborating with regulators to integrate its technology into Tokyo’s fabric.
