Digitale Schiene Deutschland has chosen Aeva’s 4D LiDAR technology to enhance the AutomatedTrain project. This initiative, managed by DB InfraGO AG and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, aims to develop driverless, fully automated passenger trains by 2026. Aeva’s cutting-edge technology will enable the detection of obstacles and hazards, ensuring safe train automation.

Key Highlights:

  • Project Overview: The AutomatedTrain project, supported by ten partners including Siemens Mobility and Bosch Engineering, aims for fully automated train dispatch and parking by 2026.
  • Aeva’s Technology: Aeva’s 4D LiDAR sensors offer high resolution, long-range performance, and instant velocity detection, crucial for obstacle and hazard identification.
  • Benefits: The technology provides accurate positioning in areas with unreliable GPS signals, like tunnels and urban canyons.

Project Details

Aeva® (NYSE: AEVA), a leader in next-generation sensing and perception systems, announced that Digitale Schiene Deutschland has selected its 4D LiDAR technology to support perception and localization in the AutomatedTrain project. Managed by DB InfraGO AG, part of Germany’s national railway operator Deutsche Bahn, this initiative aims to revolutionize train automation.

Technological Edge

The AutomatedTrain project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, involves collaboration from ten partners, including Siemens Mobility and Bosch Engineering. The project aims to create and test driverless, fully automated passenger train dispatch and parking functionalities by 2026. Equipped with smart sensor technologies, including Aeva’s LiDAR, two regional trains will detect their surroundings for full automation and obstacle reaction, akin to self-driving cars.

High Praise from Project Leaders

Dr. Christian Hauswald, Technical Project Lead of AutomatedTrain at Digitale Schiene Deutschland, emphasized Aeva’s advanced technology: “Aeva’s high-resolution LiDAR sensor combined with a compact form factor and advanced technology readiness level were in combination the reason for us to decide using Aeva for the AutomatedTrain project. We are excited to have Aeva as a supplier because they share our vision for fully automated trains.”

Advanced Capabilities

Aeva’s Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) 4D LiDAR sensors provide long-range performance with high resolution and the ability to detect velocity instantly. This capability allows trains to quickly identify moving and stationary objects, ensuring faster and more reliable hazard detection. Additionally, Aeva’s unique localization features enable real-time estimation of a train’s motion with six degrees of freedom, crucial for accurate positioning in GPS-challenged areas.

Industry Impact

Jakub Zimny, Senior Manager of Business Development at Aeva, stated, “Digitale Schiene Deutschland and its partners are undertaking massive transformation to modernize the rail industry and will set the standard for automated train operations across Europe. We are excited to collaborate and provide next-generation sensing and perception technologies to create a safe and reliable platform for the industry.”
