Waymo has voluntarily initiated a recall for a specific software version after closely consulting with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and conducting an internal review of two incidents in Phoenix on December 11, 2023. These incidents, which occurred under unusual circumstances and resulted in no injuries and only minor vehicle damage, prompted an immediate and thorough investigation by Waymo. The company swiftly updated its entire fleet with new software to rectify the issue, with updates completed between December 20, 2023, and January 12, 2024. Importantly, Waymo’s ride-hailing service operations were not disrupted during this period.

The decision for a voluntary recall underscores Waymo’s dedication to safety and transparency in its technology deployment. Although recalls are typically associated with physical vehicle repairs, Waymo’s action aims to inform the public about the software update, reflecting a commitment to meeting stringent road safety standards and legal obligations.

The incidents in question involved a Waymo vehicle encountering a backward-facing pickup truck being towed in a manner that presented an unusual challenge for the vehicle’s autonomous driving system. This resulted in minor collisions, with no Waymo passengers on board and no injuries. Waymo’s response was immediate, involving detailed analysis and a swift software update to prevent future occurrences of such scenarios.

In addition to notifying the Phoenix Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety immediately after the incidents, Waymo kept NHTSA informed and engaged in ongoing discussions to ensure compliance and safety. This proactive approach to safety, including a voluntary recall, illustrates Waymo’s commitment to not just meeting but exceeding safety expectations.

With over 10 million autonomous miles driven and more than 1 million ride-hail trips provided, Waymo’s safety record is noteworthy. The company’s extensive safety research and continuous software enhancements are central to its mission of improving road safety and reducing the incidence of crashes compared to human-driven vehicles.

Waymo’s actions, including the voluntary recall and continuous engagement with regulatory bodies like NHTSA, are part of its broader commitment to earning public trust and fostering transparent communication with all stakeholders, including riders, community members, regulators, and policymakers.
