Pony.ai has unveiled a Level 4 autonomous heavy-duty truck built on GAC Commercial Vehicle’s T9 battery-electric platform, with volume production scheduled to begin later this year. The vehicle made its global debut this week at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany, as one of the models in the company’s fourth-generation Gen-4 Robotruck lineup. Pony.ai says the truck will be deployed in long-haul freight, dedicated-route logistics and port transportation.

Redundant Chassis and Shared Robotaxi Compute
The new model pairs Pony.ai’s Gen-4 L4 autonomous trucking system with a fully redundant drive-by-wire chassis from GAC Commercial Vehicle. Steering, braking, communications, power supply, computing and sensing all use redundant architectures, which the company says supports operation across a wide range of conditions.
The automotive-grade autonomous driving kit (ADK) uses the same domain controller found in Pony.ai’s seventh-generation (Gen-7) Robotaxis, which entered mass production on the ARCFOX Alpha T5 last year. Pony.ai attributes the 70% ADK cost reduction to this shared hardware approach.
How Does the T9 Robotruck Cut Freight Costs?
Pony.ai cites two levers. The lower-cost ADK is expected to reduce transportation costs per ton-kilometer by 30%. Separately, the company’s energy-efficiency algorithms, combined with the T9’s 0.4 Cd drag coefficient, are expected to cut energy consumption by 10% compared with conventional trucks.

From Robotaxi Partnership to Robotruck
The truck extends Pony.ai’s existing relationship with GAC Group from Robotaxi into Robotruck. The two companies signed a strategic cooperation agreement on April 16, 2026, and completed vehicle testing and validation within five months. Pony.ai credits the pace to its autonomous driving expertise paired with GAC Commercial Vehicle’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
Pony.ai began Robotruck development in 2018 and now fields a portfolio spanning heavy- and light-duty trucks. The company applies the same Virtual Driver technology across Robotaxis, heavy-duty trucks and light-duty trucks, and is working with vehicle manufacturers and logistics operators in long-haul freight, bulk commodity transportation, port logistics and urban delivery. Its trucking program has previously secured approval for cross-provincial platooning tests in China.
International Expansion Plans
Pony.ai plans to enter Robotruck markets in Europe and the Middle East over the next two years. The company intends to draw on its China trucking operations and the overseas experience of its Robotaxi business, which currently has operations and partnerships in the UAE, Qatar, Croatia, Luxembourg, Singapore and South Korea.
