Bot Auto will staff the remote assistant role behind its autonomous trucking operations exclusively with U.S.-based personnel, a function the company says performs no part of the dynamic driving task. Bot Auto, which runs an L4 autonomous truck fleet out of Houston under a Transportation as a Service model, said the commitment is meant to keep first responders and law enforcement able to reach an assistant quickly during emergency situations. The company attributes three benefits to domestic staffing: consistent language fluency, familiarity with U.S. traffic laws and emergency protocol, and reliable connectivity for responders working in the field.

What Do Bot Auto’s Remote Assistants Actually Do?
The remote assistant function sits alongside the autonomous driving system rather than inside it. Assistants support communication and coordination, including direct contact with officers and emergency personnel at an incident scene, and can carry out a limited set of vehicle functions when needed.
Bot Auto said assistants are already monitoring live operations from its mission control. In practice, that covers confirming a vehicle’s status, providing cargo and routing details to responders, remotely triggering hazard lights, and facilitating a shutdown when an officer directs one.
“Remote assistants play a critical role in Bot Auto’s operations, providing a human layer of support and oversight for our autonomous fleet. We’re building out America’s 21st-century supply chain. It needs to be extremely resilient, and that’s why it’s critical that these roles are always kept within the United States,” said Brian Moore, Bot Auto’s Chief Policy Officer.
Why Location Matters in an Emergency Response
A first responder arriving at an incident involving an autonomous truck needs to reach an assistant immediately, communicate without ambiguity, and initiate a vehicle response. Bot Auto’s argument is that staffing the function domestically removes the variables — language, legal familiarity, connection quality — that can introduce delay at that moment.
“Every one of our vehicles has a mission, and every mission has a mission control,” said Captain (ret.) Bart Teeter, Director of Fleet & Operational Safety at Bot Auto. “Our remote assistants aren’t driving the truck, but they are the voice on the other end of the line when an officer needs one, and they can act on the vehicle directly when it matters. Committing to U.S.-based remote assistants is about making sure that when a first responder needs us, there is no delay, no miscommunication, and no gap in accountability. We work hand-in-hand with law enforcement and emergency services, and this is a direct reflection of that responsibility.”
The company said it has prioritized direct engagement with first responders and law enforcement as it has scaled operations across Texas, including ride-alongs, training sessions, and coordination on incident response protocols specific to autonomous trucks.
Texas DPS Frames It as an Industry Standard
Bot Auto’s decision arrives as autonomous vehicle operators face growing scrutiny over how they support first responders sharing the road with them.
“The ability to clearly and reliably communicate with a remote assistant during an emergency situation is critical to first responders,” said Major Omar Villarreal, Texas Department of Public Safety. “Miscommunication or poor connections can potentially cost valuable time in addressing emergency conditions. Autonomous vehicle operators committing to U.S.-based remote assistants convey that they are committed to their responsibility in engaging first responders by making effective communications a priority.”
Where the Commitment Sits in Bot Auto’s Safety Approach
Bot Auto describes the remote assistant model as one component of a broader safety architecture that also includes validation testing and coordination with regulators and emergency services. The company treats the U.S.-staffing commitment as a floor rather than a differentiator — a baseline it says any autonomous vehicle operator in the country should meet.
