ZF will present over-the-air software update management, a high-speed truck-trailer data link and centralized vehicle intelligence at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, positioning them as building blocks for the software-defined commercial vehicle (SdCV). The company says the approach targets uptime, efficiency and safety across the vehicle lifecycle rather than a wholesale architecture change, with ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions division preparing its ADAS, braking and driveline systems for future vehicle architectures while shipping connected services fleets can use now. ZF frames the strategy as evolutionary: deployed digital solutions first, then vehicle-wide connectivity, then software-defined functions.

Why Uptime Drives the Software-Defined Commercial Vehicle
ZF’s argument starts from a fleet economics point: commercial vehicles only generate revenue when they are on the road. At the same time, the company says new regulations, changing customer requirements and growing digitalization are adding complexity to traditional vehicle architectures. OEMs and fleet operators want to keep improving vehicle performance over the lifecycle while managing that system and software complexity, which ZF says is accelerating the shift toward software-defined commercial vehicles.
“The software-defined commercial vehicle is not about technology for technology’s sake, it is about increasing uptime, improving efficiency and continuously enhancing performance throughout the vehicle lifecycle,” explains Ivan Brajdic, Head of R&D at ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions division. “Developing and delivering this value for our customers is what drives innovation at ZF.”
Software Services Already in the Field
ZF identifies secure software update management, vehicle diagnostics, condition monitoring and connected vehicle intelligence as the foundational layers of the SdCV. Its current offerings in those categories include SUMS, ZF [pro] Diagnostics and condition monitoring through ZF Health Check, which the company says support operators in maintaining compliance, improving uptime and optimizing vehicle performance. All of the solutions include built-in cybersecurity, according to ZF.
The company is also drawing on interaction between vehicle systems, particularly braking and driveline technologies. ZF points to its Braking and e-Drive Synergy Program as an example of how those system-level synergies can improve vehicle efficiency.
How Does Truck Trailer Link Connect the Full Combination?
ZF is extending connectivity beyond individual vehicle systems to the entire truck-trailer combination and its operating environment. The Truck Trailer Link concept establishes a high-speed communication connection between truck and trailer, enabling bi-directional, real-time data exchange across the combination.
ZF says the link creates a foundation for future software-defined and intelligent vehicle functions. Potential applications the company lists include:
- ADAS integration: Routing trailer cameras into advanced driver assistance systems.
- In-cab trailer control: Operating trailer functions such as lift axles, landing legs and lighting systems from the cab.
- Connector replacement: Unifying truck-trailer communication over one cyber-secure, point-to-point link in place of conventional connectors.
Yard Operations and the SdCV Driver Terminal
Looking further ahead, ZF is developing foundations for the next generation of commercial vehicles on top of today’s software services and connectivity technologies. The SdCV Driver Terminal proof of concept, presented at the company’s CV Tech Day, explores how service-oriented software architectures and vehicle-to-infrastructure connectivity could improve productivity, safety and operational control in logistics yards. Functions explored in the concept include automatic yard configuration, remote park brake activation and BLE-based safety features, which ZF says illustrate the potential to reduce manual intervention.
ZF has previously extended its cubiX vehicle motion control platform to commercial vehicles with freight yards and ports in mind, and its steer-by-wire work is positioned for software-defined vehicle architectures.
