Ouster Qualifies Rev8 Native Color Lidar for NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion Platform

Ouster’s new Rev8 OS family of digital lidar sensors has been qualified to run on the NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion platform, giving Level 4 autonomous vehicle developers access to the world’s first native color lidar with sensing range up to 500 meters. The San Francisco–based company (Nasdaq: OUST) positioned its Rev8 OS sensors within NVIDIA’s open sensor ecosystem alongside full-stack software compatibility through optimized plugins for the NVIDIA DriveWorks SDK. The integration allows Ouster’s point-cloud data to feed directly into NVIDIA’s hardware-accelerated software stack.

Rev8 Sensor Compatibility with NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion

The qualification means automotive developers building on DRIVE Hyperion can integrate Ouster’s sensors without separate validation work. Ouster’s DriveWorks SDK plugins cover the full sensor portfolio, allowing high-density point clouds to be ingested directly into NVIDIA’s hardware-accelerated stack. DRIVE Hyperion is NVIDIA’s reference architecture for Level 4 autonomous vehicles, built around dual DRIVE AGX Thor chips on the Blackwell architecture and delivering over 2,000 FP4 teraflops of compute. NVIDIA expanded the Hyperion ecosystem at CES in January 2026, adding sensor partners including Hesai, Aeva, Arbe, Bosch, and Sony. Ouster’s qualification adds another lidar option to that lineup, with native color sensing as its differentiator.

OS1 Max and the Range Argument for High-Speed Autonomy

The Rev8 family, unveiled earlier in May, introduced what Ouster describes as the world’s first native color lidar. The flagship OS1 Max is purpose-built for high-speed autonomy, providing 256 channels of high-definition sensing up to 500 meters in all directions. Ouster reports the sensor can resolve small objects at long range — a specification the company says supports highway-speed Level 4 applications where earlier-generation lidar struggled with detection distance.

The Rev8 family is auto-grade and designed for functional safety, according to Ouster, though the company has not disclosed the specific ASIL rating targeted for the sensors. Cybersecurity provisions are also referenced without further technical detail.

Native Color Data and ADAS Training Pipelines

Modern ADAS and AV systems are trained on a combination of simulated and labeled real-world data, with labeling typically requiring significant manual effort. Ouster reports its native color lidar produces inherently fused color and depth data, which the company says enables automated annotation pipelines that label data with higher precision and less manual work. Ouster has not provided third-party benchmarks quantifying the time or cost reduction.

Ouster’s qualification arrives roughly four months after NVIDIA’s January 2026 CES announcement that broadened the Hyperion sensor ecosystem with several lidar competitors, including Hesai and Aeva. Ouster’s positioning differs on two axes: range, with the 500-meter OS1 Max exceeding the company’s prior 300-meter Alpha Prime sensor used in Motional’s IONIQ 5 robotaxis, and the native color capability, which is not offered by other Hyperion-qualified lidar partners as of this announcement.
