ZF Commercial Vehicle Solutions Invests in 5G for Enhanced Autonomous Driving Testing

Friedrichshafen/Jeversen, Germany – ZF Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) has invested in 5G digital connectivity to further its commitment to advancing ‘Next Generation Mobility.’ The German-based division has equipped its commercial vehicle test track at Jeversen with its own campus network to enhance the testing of data-backed solutions for Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and Transportation as a Service (TaaS).

Dr. Christian Brenneke, Senior Vice President of Product Engineering at ZF CVS, says the campus network sets another powerful milestone in the group’s ‘Next Generation Mobility’ strategy. The advanced network will enable ZF to meet future advances and technology changes and support its customers with rigorously tested, cutting-edge innovations.

Dr. Rolf Reinema, Vice President IT Workplace, IT Infrastructure & Operations, IT Security at ZF, says the new network is based on an open intelligent Radio Access Network with a virtualized, cloud-based and open architecture. It ensures stable transmission infrastructure with low latency and high security, enabling near real-time command transmission between vehicles and infrastructure.

The Jeversen test track in Lower Saxony, Germany, will enable ZF to emulate different autonomous driving use cases, from low-speed yard operations to high-speed highway operations. The campus network will also support remote access and data transfer from test vehicles to cloud-based storage and rapid downloads. It will benefit ZF guests with high-quality audio and video streams from moving demonstration vehicles and track-side cameras. Being independent from mobile service providers, ZF can quickly and flexibly adapt the campus network to changing technology requirements.
