Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced plans to commercialize its autonomous driving mobility services in Japan by fiscal year 2027, marking a pivotal move towards its Nissan Ambition 2030 vision. This initiative aims to address the transportation challenges faced by local communities, including those caused by an aging population and driver shortages, by offering a variety of new services that facilitate free movement.
Since 2017, Nissan has been exploring business models for these services both within Japan and internationally, conducting trials in the Minato Mirai area of Yokohama and Namie town, Fukushima Prefecture, as well as in London with the UK government’s support. These efforts are poised to culminate in the launch of autonomous mobility services starting in fiscal 2027, following a series of trials set to begin in Minato Mirai in fiscal 2024.
Key milestones include:
- Fiscal 2024: Autonomous driving tests in Yokohama’s Minato Mirai area, utilizing vehicles based on the Serena minivan.
- Fiscal 2025 to 2026: Service demonstration tests in Yokohama, encompassing Minato Mirai, Sakuragi-cho, and Kannai, with 20 vehicles.
- Fiscal 2027: Plans to initiate services in three to four municipalities, targeting both urban and rural areas, with an expanded fleet.
This initiative represents a collaboration with local authorities, transport operators, and central ministries, including the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism; aiming to enhance autonomous driving technology and customer acceptance through gradual advancements. The goal is to offer driverless services, significantly contributing to the resolution of local mobility challenges and aligning with broader efforts to promote autonomous mobility at the national level.
