Kodiak AI and ZF Expand Partnership for 100 Redundant Steering Systems

Kodiak AI and ZF are expanding their partnership with the delivery of 100 redundant steering systems, advancing safe, fail-operational control for Kodiak’s growing fleet of driverless trucks.

Kodiak AI and ZF are deepening their collaboration to advance autonomous truck safety and scalability, with Kodiak set to integrate 100 ZF redundant steering systems into its driverless fleet.

Highlights

  • 100 redundant steering systems purchased to expand Kodiak’s autonomous truck operations.
  • ZF’s ReAX adaptive electronic steering assist and next-generation Electric Power Steering enhance safety and precision.
  • Redundant actuators ensure fail-operational control, supporting fully driverless deployment.
  • Roush handles upfitting of Kodiak Driver-equipped trucks with ZF steering systems in Michigan.

Strengthening Autonomous Truck Reliability

Kodiak AI, Inc. (Nasdaq: KDK), a leader in AI-driven autonomous vehicle technology, announced an expanded partnership with ZF, a global supplier of advanced mobility solutions for commercial and passenger vehicles. The agreement covers the purchase of 100 redundant steering systems that will be integrated into Kodiak’s driverless trucks, enhancing operational safety and reliability.

ZF’s redundant ReAX adaptive electronic steering assist system and Electric Power Steering solutions are key to enabling scalable, fail-safe autonomous trucking. “At ZF, our goal is to enhance the autonomous vehicle industry with innovative, redundant steering solutions that improve safety, precision, and reliability,” said Praful Bari, Head of Application Engineering, Commercial Vehicle Solutions, ZF.

Redundancy for Safe Driverless Operation

Redundant steering systems are central to Kodiak’s autonomy strategy. If a primary actuator fails, the system seamlessly switches to a secondary actuator, allowing Kodiak’s virtual Driver to maintain full control and execute a safe fallback. This redundancy supports continuous operation without human intervention.

Kodiak first integrated ZF’s redundant steering technology in its sixth-generation autonomous truck, unveiled in 2024. ZF’s manufacturing flexibility enabled rapid production scaling to meet Kodiak’s specific requirements. Final vehicle integration takes place at Roush’s facility in Livonia, Michigan, where Kodiak Driver-equipped trucks are upfitted with ZF’s ReAX steering solutions.

Collaborative Innovation

“Kodiak and ZF have collaborated since our founding,” said Jamie Hoffacker, VP of Hardware at Kodiak AI. “ZF’s technologies and engineering expertise have been critical in achieving the safety and reliability standards necessary for commercial deployment of driverless semi-trucks.”

The collaboration exemplifies the industry’s push toward redundant-by-design autonomous systems, which are essential for the safe and scalable adoption of driverless trucking in commercial logistics.
