TIER IV, a leading force in autonomous driving technology, has recently been chosen for a significant project under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) phase 3 funding, aimed at enhancing safety processes for Level 4 autonomous vehicles. This initiative, supported by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT), involves a consortium that includes prominent entities like BOLDLY and the Kanagawa Institute of Technology. With a budget of about 7.7 billion yen over four years, this project underscores TIER IV’s commitment to advancing regional public transportation through safe, autonomous driving solutions.

Key Highlights:

  • TIER IV’s Selection: Spearheading a project to develop Level 4 autonomous driving safety assessments.
  • Consortium Collaboration: Partnership with leading companies and institutions to leverage expertise.
  • Significant Funding: A 7.7 billion yen grant to support the project from 2024 to 2027.
  • Safety and Development Goals: Establishing rigorous safety standards and DevOps frameworks for autonomous vehicles.

The project aligns with the Japanese government’s objectives to improve sustainability in regional transportation through autonomous driving technologies. TIER IV and its partners will focus on establishing robust safety assessment processes and operational guidelines to facilitate the deployment of autonomous vehicles. This includes the creation of an integrated DevOps framework for Level 4 AD certification, which entails defining operational domains, deriving risk scenarios, and establishing safety assessment methods.

Furthermore, TIER IV aims to tailor autonomous driving packages for regional stakeholders, encompassing vehicles, safety methods, fleet management systems, and utility tools to support the integration of autonomous driving services.

Through these collaborative efforts, TIER IV is set to play a crucial role in achieving the government’s vision of introducing autonomous vehicles in over 100 cities by 2027. This initiative is expected to address critical challenges such as driver shortages and enhance the efficiency of regional public transportation systems.
