TIER IV has announced the launch of L4 RIDE, a comprehensive solution aimed at supporting local governments and transportation operators in the deployment of autonomous bus services. This initiative addresses critical aspects such as driver shortages and regional development, providing a full suite of services from setup to operation, including hardware, software, and regulatory compliance. L4 RIDE’s introduction is a strategic move to enhance the implementation of autonomous driving (AD) technologies across Japan.
In alignment with the Japanese government’s goal, there is a push to have autonomous vehicles operational in over 50 locations by 2025, expanding to more than 100 by 2027. The introduction of AD services involves intricate planning from the conceptual design and proof of concept (PoC) tests to full-scale operation. L4 RIDE promises comprehensive support, including risk assessments, 3D mapping, and viability testing, ensuring smooth transitions from initial tests to maintenance and updates during service operations. A crucial part of this support is obtaining Level 4 certification, signifying a high degree of automation where the vehicle can operate without human intervention under specific conditions.
TIER IV’s commitment to advancing AD services is further exemplified by the launch of the white-label vehicle solution, fanfare, in June 2023. This initiative aims to enhance the stability of AD service operations through the integration of fanfare and L4 RIDE, facilitating easier maintenance and updates.
A significant achievement for TIER IV was obtaining Level 4 certification in Greater Tokyo in October 2023, marking a pivotal step forward in the commercialization and spread of AD services. The company has already conducted PoC tests in various Japanese locations, including Shiojiri, Komatsu, Sado, and Narita International Airport, laying the groundwork for nationwide commercialization of these services.
