The Dallas vehicles operate commercially through the Uber app, while the Austin fleet remains in active road testing.

A Texas-Anchored Deployment

Both fleet hubs sit in Texas. The Austin operation centers on Avride’s depot and continues to function as the primary testing ground for its self-driving stack. Dallas, by contrast, hosts the company’s first commercial passenger service.

That commercial service launched on December 3, 2025 through a partnership with Uber. Riders within a nine-square-mile zone covering downtown, Uptown, Turtle Creek, and Deep Ellum may be matched with an Avride vehicle when requesting UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric. The company first signaled the Dallas rollout in its multi-year strategic deal with Uber announced in late 2024, which began with sidewalk delivery robots before extending to passenger transport.

Pre-Assembled Electronics Drive Throughput

Avride attributes its monthly fleet growth to a manufacturing approach that pre-assembles core electronic components before vehicle integration. The company has not published the specific cycle time, output figures, or component list, but frames the workflow as the enabling factor behind dozens of new vehicles entering service each month.

The platform itself is the Hyundai Ioniq 5, retrofitted with Avride’s sensor suite. According to Axios reporting on the Dallas launch, each vehicle carries 13 cameras alongside lidar, radar, and additional sensors, with a backseat tablet displaying the route to passengers.

Safety Operator Still Behind the Wheel

Although Avride positions its Ioniq 5s as fully autonomous platforms, an on-board specialist currently sits in the driver’s seat during commercial Dallas rides. Both Uber and Avride have stated that fully driverless operations will follow, without committing to a public timeline. Riders matched with an Avride vehicle receive a notification and retain the option to switch to a human-driven trip at no cost difference.

Funding and Competitive Context

The fleet expansion follows a $375 million investment round in October 2025 from Uber and Nebius Group, Avride’s Amsterdam-based parent. The capital infusion is aimed squarely at scaling vehicle production and commercial deployment.

Avride’s Dallas launch beat both Waymo and Lyft to commercial robotaxi operations in the city, though Waymo has since announced its own driverless rollout there. Uber now operates 20 autonomous vehicle partnerships globally across freight, delivery, and passenger services, with Avride sitting alongside Waymo, WeRide, Wayve, and Momenta in the company’s AV roster.

Avride’s broader infrastructure footprint also extends beyond the vehicles themselves. Bluedot’s EV fleet management platform handles charging operations for Avride’s autonomous fleets, supporting the energy logistics behind continuous robotaxi availability.
