XPENG has begun mass production of its first Robotaxi at its Guangzhou headquarters, a Level 4 autonomous vehicle built on the company’s GX platform and powered by four in-house Turing AI chips delivering 3,000 TOPS of effective on-board computing power. The Chinese automaker (NYSE: XPEV, HKEX: 9868) said the rollout represents the first time in China that an automaker has reached mass production of a Robotaxi through full-stack, in-house development. Additional details on the program and platform accompanied the announcement.
Highlights
- First mass-produced Robotaxi in China developed through full-stack, in-house development, built on the XPENG GX platform
- Powered by four self-developed Turing AI chips delivering 3,000 TOPS of effective on-board computing power
- Pure-vision architecture — no LiDAR, no high-definition maps — with system response latency under 80 milliseconds
- Pilot operations slated for the second half of this year; fully autonomous operations without on-site safety officer targeted by early 2027
Platform and Compute
The Robotaxi is built on the XPENG GX platform and is described by the company as China’s first production-ready, pre-assembled Robotaxi model developed entirely with in-house technologies. It is engineered to L4 autonomous driving standards.
Four self-developed Turing AI chips supply the on-board compute. XPENG reports an effective computing power of 3,000 TOPS, which the company characterizes as industry-leading.

Architecture: Pure Vision and VLA 2.0
The vehicle operates without LiDAR and without reliance on high-definition maps. Perception and decision-making are handled by a pure vision stack driven by XPENG’s VLA 2.0 end-to-end large model. The company says the model eliminates the language-translation step found in traditional three-stage Vision-Language-Action architectures, compressing system response latency to under 80 milliseconds. XPENG also describes enhanced urban generalization capabilities that, according to the company, support cross-city and cross-border deployment.
Cabin Configuration
The mass-produced Robotaxi is equipped with intelligent cabin features including privacy glass, comfort gravity seats, and rear in-car entertainment screens. Passengers can access multimedia content and adjust in-car settings through a built-in voice assistant during rides.
Commercialization Roadmap
XPENG plans to initiate pilot Robotaxi operations in the second half of this year, with the stated goals of validating technical viability, user acceptance, and the complete business model. The company is targeting fully autonomous operations without an on-site safety officer by early 2027.
Earlier this year, XPENG secured a road testing permit for intelligent connected vehicles in Guangzhou, entering the phase of routine L4 public road testing. The company subsequently established a dedicated Robotaxi business unit covering product definition, R&D testing, and operations to advance the commercialization timeline in the city.
On the ecosystem side, XPENG said it will open its Robotaxi SDK, naming Amap as its first global ecosystem partner.
Physical AI Ecosystem
XPENG positions the mass-produced Robotaxi as a flagship product of its broader physical AI ecosystem. The company says the vehicle shares the same VLA 2.0 large model foundation as its IRON humanoid robot and its flying car program, and that, as a full-stack automaker with in-house capabilities spanning software, chips, and complete vehicles, it intends to move directly to scaled delivery once technical validation is complete.
XPENG (NYSE: XPEV, HKEX: 9868) is headquartered in Guangzhou and operates additional offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Silicon Valley, and Amsterdam, with manufacturing in Zhaoqing and Guangzhou.
