Volkswagen Upgrades IQ.DRIVE ADAS for 2027 Models

Volkswagen is upgrading IQ.DRIVE on 2027 Atlas, Golf, ID. Buzz and Tiguan models with driver-initiated lane changes, an Emergency Assist Plus shoulder-stop function, a pedestrian-detecting rearview camera, and predictive ACC improvements.

Volkswagen is adding driver-initiated lane changes, an Emergency Assist Plus function that can steer an unresponsive driver’s vehicle to the shoulder, and a pedestrian-detecting rearview camera across its 2027 Atlas, Golf, ID. Buzz and Tiguan lineups. The upgrades apply to existing features within IQ.DRIVE, the standard driver assistance suite the company says already includes Travel Assist, Front Assist, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist and Emergency Assist on every vehicle in its lineup. According to the release, the changes cover 2027 models built on the MQB Evo and MEB platforms, and the ID. Buzz additionally gains cloud-based road data to support its ADAS as part of a subscription service.

How Does Travel Assist Lane Changing Work?

With Travel Assist engaged and road speed above 45 mph, the driver initiates a lane change by pressing the turn signal partially up or down. The corresponding turn signal blinks three times in the Digital Cockpit, and the system uses the rear radar sensors to check for adjacent traffic before moving left or right when it determines the lane is clear.

An on-hold wait-to-clear function pauses the lane change for up to 12 seconds until traffic clears. The hold is indicated by a white flashing arrow in the ID. Buzz, or by a green flashing arrow with a red hash on Atlas family, Golf family and Tiguan vehicles, signaling that another vehicle is blocking the desired lane. A green arrow animation appears in the Digital Cockpit on all models once the lane change begins.

Emergency Assist Plus Adds Shoulder Stop

Emergency Assist Plus builds on the existing Emergency Assist feature with the ability to guide the vehicle to the side of the road if it senses a medical emergency. Either Lane Assist or Travel Assist must be active for the system to work. In Lane Assist, it triggers when the vehicle detects multiple lane departure events in a row without driver intervention; in Travel Assist, it triggers when no steering wheel input is detected for 25 seconds.

The escalation sequence differs by mode. In Lane Assist, the system issues visual and audible warnings before the vehicle begins moving toward the roadside. In Travel Assist, the horn sounds, the brakes are jerked three times, and the seatbelt pre-tensions to alert the driver.

If the driver does not respond, the vehicle moves to the shoulder, provided the front-facing camera determines there is enough room. If adequate space is not detected, the vehicle moves to the farthest right lane instead. During the maneuver, the brake lights indicate the car is slowing, the turn signal shows the direction of the lane change, and the hazard lights activate.

Once stopped on the shoulder or in the right lane, the vehicle shifts to Park with hazards flashing and horn sounding. The doors unlock, the lights turn on, and the emergency call function activates.

Rearview Camera Detects Pedestrians While Reversing

A new Rearview Camera System, standard on certain trims of the 2027 Atlas, ID. Buzz and Tiguan, uses an enhanced camera that can detect pedestrians behind the vehicle. If a pedestrian is detected while the vehicle reverses at 1 to 6 mph, the system automatically applies the brakes to help mitigate a collision. The feature arrives as backing-crash reduction draws growing attention from safety researchers and regulators.

Predictive ACC Gains Ramp Support

Updates to Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (pACC) for 2027 address speed-limit adoption and highway exits. The system now allows earlier adoption of increased speed limits through driver accelerator input following a system notification, which the company says reduces delays from traffic sign recognition.

pACC also extends to ramps, enabling exit deceleration and guidance via navigation or turn-signal input. Before any automatic speed adjustment, a popup in the Digital Cockpit lets the driver accept or reject the change: tapping the accelerator accepts an increased speed, and pressing the Res button on the steering wheel rejects it.

What Is Road Experience Management on the ID. Buzz?

For the 2027 ID. Buzz, Road Experience Management (REM) data becomes part of the In-Vehicle Premium subscription service. REM is cloud-based and gathers camera data from real-world road users on lane markings, signage and street lighting to improve map quality, which in turn supports the vehicle’s advanced driver assistance systems.

According to the release, the map data can keep the vehicle centered in a lane with poorly visible lane lines without relying entirely on the onboard camera. For speed, the vehicle can use swarm data from surrounding traffic to match the flow around it, up to the posted limit.

A one-year In-Vehicle Premium trial is included on the 2027 ID. Buzz. The package also includes Premium Navigation and Speech, AirConsole in-vehicle gaming, What3Words navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot that enables access to the Volkswagen App Store.
