Tesla Model Y Becomes First Vehicle to Pass NHTSA’s New ADAS Tests

The 2026 Tesla Model Y is the first vehicle to clear all four of NHTSA’s new pass/fail tests for advanced driver assistance systems, covering pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention. The agency announced the milestone on May 7, 2026, applying it to Model Y units manufactured on or after November 12, 2025. The four evaluations were added to the New Car Assessment Program under a 10-year roadmap NHTSA published in late 2024.

What the New Tests Measure

The updated NCAP framework adds objective performance evaluations to four ADAS technologies that automakers have widely marketed but that the federal program had not previously benchmarked. Pedestrian automatic emergency braking targets a category of crash that has grown sharply on U.S. roads. Lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention address the side-swipe and run-off-road scenarios common in highway driving.

The evaluations are pass/fail rather than scored on a curve, and they measure how the systems perform rather than simply confirming that the feature is installed. NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison framed the result as a benchmark for the broader industry. “Today’s announcement marks a significant step forward in our efforts to provide consumers with the most comprehensive safety ratings ever,” Morrison said. “By successfully passing these new tests, the 2026 Tesla Model Y demonstrates the lifesaving potential of driver assistance technologies and sets a high bar for the industry. We hope to see many more manufacturers develop vehicles that can meet these requirements.”

The Model Y also passed the four original ADAS categories NHTSA had previously incorporated into NCAP: forward collision warning, crash imminent braking, dynamic brake support, and lane departure warning.

Why Other Models Have Not Been Tested Yet

The new ADAS evaluations were finalized in December 2024 and were originally scheduled to take effect for model year 2026 vehicles. In September 2025, NHTSA postponed full implementation by one model year to MY2027, after the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the trade group representing most major automakers, requested additional time. The trade group cited unresolved test procedures, technical questions, and timeline concerns in its filings.

Under the postponement, NHTSA still issues checkmarks for any MY2026 vehicle a manufacturer attests has passed the new criteria — which is the path the Model Y has now used. The delay means most other automakers have not submitted vehicles for testing under the new framework, not because their ADAS hardware is missing, but because the formal testing window was pushed back. Pedestrian AEB, lane keeping assistance, and blind spot warning are standard or widely available across recent vehicles from Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, BMW, and other manufacturers.

The new NCAP evaluations align more closely with Euro NCAP, the European consumer safety program that has rated assisted-driving systems since 2020 and recently reviewed models including the BMW i5, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Volkswagen ID.7. Context: Ongoing FSD Investigation

The pass/fail result applies to the Model Y’s basic ADAS feature set, not to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation is separately conducting an Engineering Analysis of FSD covering approximately 3.2 million Tesla vehicles, focused on system performance in reduced visibility conditions including sun glare, fog, and airborne dust. The two proceedings cover different scopes: the NCAP result evaluates the Model Y’s standard driver-assist suite against pass/fail criteria, while the Engineering Analysis evaluates whether FSD’s design adequately handles a defined set of low-visibility scenarios.
