What Does the New XC40 Sensor Platform Include?
The refreshed XC40’s safety functions are built on a new software and sensor platform, according to the release. The hardware additions include new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors, and new parking cameras, which Volvo Cars says give the car a more comprehensive view of its surroundings.
The company says the car can respond in real time when a potential collision is detected, either warning the driver or intervening. The intervention options cited are automatic emergency steering and automatic emergency braking, which the system uses to select what Volvo describes as the safest action in the moment. The platform continues the automaker’s broader push into active safety and driver assistance across its lineup.
New and Upgraded Driver Support Functions
The updated platform enables several new or revised functions:
- Door Opening Alert warns occupants before they open a door into passing traffic, a function the company frames as protection for cyclists and other road users.
- Pilot Assist, offered as an option, is expanded with lane change assist and refined to follow the road more smoothly, which Volvo says adds support and comfort on longer trips. The system’s earlier iteration has been evaluated in Euro NCAP’s assisted-driving gradings.
- 360 camera, also optional, is upgraded to a 3D view intended to ease parking and low-speed maneuvers.
Like other current Volvo models, the XC40 receives over-the-air updates that deliver new software and features to cars already on the road.
Redesigned Exterior
The front end carries a new version of the Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, an upgraded grille, and a redesigned front bumper, hood, and front fenders. At the rear, the XC40 gets new LED taillights, an upgraded tailgate, and a redesigned rear bumper. New diamond-cut wheels are offered in 18-inch, 19-inch, and 20-inch sizes.
“By enhancing the XC40’s design, technology and safety features, we’ve created the best version of the XC40 yet,” said Akhil Krishnan, Interim Lead for the 30 and 40 Series at Volvo Cars. “This already popular model is now set to continue being one of our best-selling cars for years to come.”
Interior: 11.2-Inch Screen and Google Gemini
The cabin receives a new 11.2-inch center screen running Volvo Cars’ latest user experience, which the company says requires fewer taps to reach key functions. The XC40 also integrates Google Gemini, Google’s next-generation AI assistant, for natural-language tasks such as trip planning, finding stops, and managing messages.
Other interior changes include an updated wireless phone charger and revised storage. New upholstery and decor options arrive as well: for the first time, XC40 buyers can specify Arianne Cardamom leather paired with Brown Ash wood decor, and the cabin also offers Black Ash or aluminum decor alongside revised cabin illumination.
Production and Deliveries
The new XC40 enters production in fall 2026, with customer deliveries expected to begin in early 2027.
