Uber and WeRide have launched an autonomous mobility service in Abu Dhabi, marking the first time autonomous vehicles are available on the Uber platform outside the United States. The collaboration, supported by Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre, makes this the largest commercial robotaxi service outside the U.S. and China. Tawasul Transport will manage the fleet of WeRide autonomous vehicles.

Key Highlights:

  • First autonomous vehicles on Uber platform outside U.S.
  • Largest commercial robotaxi service outside U.S. and China
  • Service covers Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and Abu Dhabi Airport routes
  • Tawasul Transport serves as the main fleet operator
  • Initial launch with safety operators, aiming for driverless service in 2025

The partnership between Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: UBER), a leader in mobility and delivery, and WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD), the world’s first publicly listed Robotaxi company, introduces a new chapter for autonomous ride-hailing in the Middle East. The service is initially available for UberX and Uber Comfort users, who can now be matched with a WeRide autonomous vehicle for trips in key areas of Abu Dhabi, including Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and routes to and from Abu Dhabi International Airport. Expansion of the service to other areas is planned for the future.

To ensure a safe and reliable experience, each WeRide autonomous vehicle will include a safety operator at the initial stage of the launch. This setup lays the foundation for a fully driverless commercial service expected to commence by late 2025. Riders interested in experiencing the autonomous service can opt-in via the Ride Preferences section of their Uber app.

Noah Zych, Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous Mobility and Delivery Operations, expressed excitement about the launch: “We’re thrilled to launch our partnership with WeRide, and receive the support of Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre. As we take this next step in Abu Dhabi, we are excited to build on the strength of the Uber platform, helping our partners make autonomous vehicles a part of everyday life.”

Jennifer Li, Chief Financial Officer and Head of International Business at WeRide, emphasized the company’s focus on safety: “WeRide prioritizes passenger and pedestrian safety through rigorously validated autonomous driving technology. As the first publicly listed Robotaxi company, WeRide has demonstrated its commitment to safety through over 1,800 days of public operational experience, setting new benchmarks for autonomous vehicle performance.”

Safety remains a top priority for both companies. WeRide’s safety protocols align with Uber’s Safety Guidelines for all autonomous vehicle partners on the Uber platform, and safety performance will be closely monitored throughout the deployment.
