TIER IV and Isuzu Motors have announced the deployment of Level 4 autonomous buses on Isuzu’s ERGA platform. The vehicles will run on NVIDIA’s DRIVE Hyperion computing architecture, pairing TIER IV’s Autoware-based software stack with NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor system-on-chip hardware. Both electric and diesel ERGA models will receive the autonomous capability.

Platform Architecture
The autonomous buses use NVIDIA’s DRIVE Hyperion platform as their core computing foundation. DRIVE Hyperion is a production-ready autonomous driving development platform. It combines a standardized sensor suite, high-performance AI computing, and a software stack designed to accelerate AV deployment.
At the center of the system sits the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor system-on-chip. The chip delivers up to 2,000 TFLOPS of compute performance. It meets ASIL-D compliance standards and provides built-in redundancy for safety-critical operations.
Software and Integration
TIER IV’s Level 4 software stack is built on Autoware, an open-source autonomous driving framework. The integration layers Autoware’s perception, planning, and control capabilities onto Isuzu’s bus hardware and NVIDIA’s AI compute platform.
Shinpei Kato, founder and CEO of TIER IV, said the collaboration combines Isuzu’s engineering with NVIDIA’s Thor AI compute to create a foundation for Level 4 transit powered by Autoware.
Hiroshi Sato, Senior Executive Officer and Vice President of Isuzu’s Engineering Division, said deploying Level 4 autonomy on both ERGA EV and diesel models allows the company to offer versatile solutions across fleet types.
Addressing Transit Challenges
The partnership targets a specific operational need in Japan’s public transit sector. NVIDIA Vice President of Automotive Rishi Dhall noted that TIER IV and Isuzu’s solution addresses Japan’s national driver shortage. He added that the system delivers the operational standards required for essential public services.
The deployment covers both electric and diesel ERGA variants. This dual-platform approach gives transit operators flexibility in fleet planning regardless of powertrain preference.
