Kodiak AI and General Dynamics Land Systems Form Autonomous Military Vehicle Pact

Kodiak AI and General Dynamics Land Systems have formed a strategic collaboration to develop autonomous ground vehicles for U.S. Army and international defense missions, starting with the Leonidas counter-drone AGV.

Kodiak AI (Nasdaq: KDK) and General Dynamics Land Systems announced a strategic collaboration to build autonomous ground vehicles for defense applications, with the partners’ Leonidas Autonomous Ground Vehicle for counter-drone missions as their first joint project. The companies said Kodiak will provide the Kodiak Driver — its AI-powered virtual driver — while General Dynamics Land Systems leads vehicle integration, power systems, communications and ruggedized platform development. Both partners said they will jointly pursue upcoming U.S. Army and international vehicle proposals, extending the relationship beyond the Leonidas AGV.

Highlights

  • Kodiak supplies the Kodiak Driver autonomous system; GDLS leads vehicle integration, power, communications and ruggedized platform development
  • First joint vehicle is the Leonidas AGV, equipped with Epirus’ Leonidas high-power microwave platform for mobile counter-drone operations
  • The companies adapted a commercial Ford F-600 truck for the Leonidas AGV in response to the Pentagon’s “commercial-first” acquisition strategy
  • The partners will jointly pursue U.S. Army and international opportunities across multiple platforms and mission sets

A scalable autonomy stack across military platforms

The collaboration is structured as a division of labor between a commercial autonomy provider and a tier-one defense vehicle integrator. Kodiak contributes the Kodiak Driver, an AI-powered virtual driver that the company says is operating driverlessly today. GDLS, part of the Fortune 100 General Dynamics group (NYSE: GD), brings vehicle integration, power and communications systems, and ruggedized platform engineering. Together, the partners describe the arrangement as a scalable autonomy capability that can be applied across multiple military vehicle platforms and mission sets.

The companies will pursue upcoming U.S. Army and international opportunities to expand their joint vehicle portfolio beyond the initial Leonidas program.

The Leonidas AGV: counter-drone autonomy on a commercial chassis

The partnership’s first product is the Leonidas Autonomous Ground Vehicle, unveiled earlier this spring at the AUSA Global Force Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama. Developed jointly with Epirus, the Leonidas AGV mounts Epirus’ Leonidas high-power microwave platform on a Ford F-600 truck equipped with the Kodiak Driver, with GDLS serving as lead system integrator. The vehicle is designed for mobile counter-UAS operations and can be operated autonomously or teleoperated.

GDLS and Kodiak adapted the commercial Ford truck for use cases spanning logistics resupply, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and maneuver operations. The companies selected a commercial chassis in response to the Pentagon’s “commercial-first” strategy, which prioritizes adapting commercial systems to:

  • Reduce acquisition costs by leveraging established commercial supply chains
  • Lower technical risk through use of proven, mass-produced vehicle platforms
  • Accelerate fielding by shortening development and qualification timelines

This commercial-first posture is consistent with Kodiak’s broader defense work. The company’s autonomy stack is vehicle- and powertrain-agnostic, and Kodiak has previously partnered with Textron Systems on the RIPSAW M3 uncrewed ground vehicle and with the Department of Defense on a ruggedized Ford F-150 test platform.

Executive commentary

“This collaboration directly meets the U.S. military’s need for scalable, adaptable, and cost-effective autonomous ground vehicles operating forward in contested environments while reducing risk to service members,” said Don Burnette, Founder and CEO of Kodiak. “General Dynamics Land Systems’ expertise in defense ground vehicle development and integration is world-class and makes it an ideal partner to deploy Kodiak’s AI-powered autonomy system across a wide range of platforms.”

“Kodiak’s autonomous solution complements our strength in quickly and efficiently delivering mission-ready vehicles to Soldiers and Marines around the world,” said Keith Barclay, Vice President and General Manager of U.S. Operations at General Dynamics Land Systems. “Together, we are focused on giving our customers the power to win by collaborating on flexible, commercially inspired platforms that can be rapidly adapted.”
