Passengers in Huangpu District now have access to a fully driverless ride-hailing service at any time of day, available for booking through the WeRide Go app. This service allows for trips between any two points within the designated operational area, offering unprecedented convenience.
WeRide demonstrated its signature ‘WeRide Speed’ by moving from the GXR model’s launch in October 2024 to full commercial operation in under a year. This rapid progression included comprehensive road testing, securing model certification, and obtaining the necessary operating licenses. Huangpu District, known as a center for innovation and global investment, provides an ideal environment to showcase how autonomous transport can meet diverse and growing urban mobility needs.
Advanced Technology and Passenger Safety
The Robotaxi GXR is engineered with industry-leading technology to navigate complex urban environments. It operates on the HPC 3.0 high-performance computing platform, which features NVIDIA’s latest dual DRIVE AGX Thor processors. This system can perform over 20 quadrillion calculations per second, providing the powerful processing needed for L4 autonomous driving.
To ensure safety and reliability, the vehicle is equipped with Sensor Suite 5.6, which provides clear visibility in adverse conditions like rain, fog, and low light. The sensors can precisely detect pedestrians, other vehicles, and construction zones. The GXR also features a comprehensive redundancy system covering its architecture, steer-by-wire chassis, computing units, and braking systems to prevent single-point failures and guarantee passenger safety. The vehicle’s design prioritizes passenger comfort, with a spacious interior, maximized legroom, and seating for up to five people.
A History of Innovation in Guangzhou
WeRide has a long-standing presence in Guangzhou. As early as November 2019, the company launched China’s first public Robotaxi monetization service in Huangpu District, covering approximately 145 square kilometers of open roads. By May 2025, WeRide’s Robotaxi service had expanded to cover key city landmarks and major transportation hubs, including Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Guangzhou South Railway Station. To date, WeRide’s Robotaxis have a proven track record of safely operating for over 2,200 days.
