Embotech Earns Second TÜV-Certified Level 4 System

Embotech received TÜV SÜD certification for its Autonomous Tractor Solution, becoming the first company with two Level 4 certified systems and enabling driverless tractor deployment across European industrial facilities.

Embotech has received the TÜV SÜD EC-Type Examination Certificate for its Autonomous Tractor Solution, enabling deployment of driverless tractors in gated industrial environments across Europe. The certification also grants CE marking approval for production deployment.

The milestone makes Embotech the first company worldwide to hold two independently certified SAE Level 4 autonomous driving solutions.

Highlights

  • Embotech becomes the first company globally with two TÜV-certified Level 4 autonomous systems
  • Certification covers functional safety, electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and cybersecurity
  • System operates without external sensing infrastructure or server dependence
  • Recognition extends to the UK, with ISO 13849 alignment supporting North American deployment pathways

Certification Scope and Standards

The EC-Type Examination Certificate encompasses functional safety, electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and cybersecurity requirements. Certification-relevant testing validated compliance with machine safety standards, including:

  • Redundant perception systems
  • Real-time detection and reaction capabilities
  • Failsafe mechanisms
  • Hardware redundancy
  • Safety architecture validation

The certification is recognized in the UK. Alignment with ISO 13849 supports future deployment pathways in North America.

System Architecture

The Autonomous Tractor Solution operates without reliance on external sensing systems or server infrastructure. All safety-critical functions are integrated on board.

The platform combines multi-modal perception, robust trajectory planning, and TÜV-certified redundant compute hardware. Embotech developed the system drawing on more than a decade of autonomous driving experience, with over 500,000 vehicles operated autonomously in industrial deployments.

“Our system combines a dual-path software architecture: an AI stack that enables human-like driving in mixed-traffic scenarios, and a deterministic safety path that safeguards the AI,” said Dr. Alexander Domahidi, Embotech CTO and Founder. “This allows us to deliver high-performance autonomy without compromising on safety. Running on commercially available sensing and compute hardware, the system is highly scalable and cost-efficient.”

Deployment Applications

The solution meets industrial safety requirements for deployment across multiple facility types:

  • Ports and marine terminals
  • OEM production plants
  • Logistics hubs
  • Distribution centers
  • Large industrial yards

The system supports continuous operation in challenging mixed-traffic environments.

Production Deployments Underway

While Embotech’s first certification covered its infrastructure-based Automated Vehicle Marshalling system, the Autonomous Tractor Solution enables ongoing customer deployments. Current operations include autonomous terminal tractor services at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II.
