Glydways has broken ground on its first publicly accessible Automated Transit Network (ATN) in South Metro Atlanta. The demonstration pilot, announced at the South Metro Development Outlook Conference (SMDO26), represents the worldwide debut of a fully autonomous, on-demand transit system operating as public transportation.

How the System Works
Glydways operates fully autonomous electric vehicles on dedicated guideways. The system provides on-demand, direct-route service around the clock. Unlike traditional fixed-route transit, riders request trips individually, and vehicles travel directly to the destination without intermediate stops.
The dedicated guideway approach separates autonomous vehicles from mixed traffic. This enables consistent performance independent of road congestion. The company states the infrastructure can be deployed faster and at lower cost than conventional transit modes.
South Metro Atlanta Pilot Details
The initial corridor spans 0.5 miles, jointly developed by Glydways and ACS Infra in collaboration with ATL Airport Community Improvement Districts (AACIDs). The pilot will serve as a real-world testing ground for several operational benchmarks:
- Reliability under continuous public use
- Scalability for future corridor expansion
- Integration with existing multimodal transit networks, including MARTA
Regional partners supporting the project include the City of College Park, Clayton County, and Fulton County. MARTA’s feasibility study will evaluate whether the system warrants broader deployment across the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Global Expansion Momentum
The Atlanta groundbreaking coincides with growing international interest. Glydways has pursued agreements in multiple regions facing urban congestion challenges.
The Dubai RTA agreement supports the city’s public transport and sustainability goals. The Abu Dhabi Investment Office partnership, signed in November 2025, explores deployment across Abu Dhabi. Glydways has also identified opportunities in Tokyo, Florida, California, New York, and other major metropolitan areas.

“Congestion is a global problem, and cities everywhere are searching for solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and deliver a better service for their communities,” said Chris Riley, Chief Commercial Officer of Glydways. Riley added that the Atlanta pilot demonstrates how autonomous public transit can expand access and improve reliability without expanding roads.

The December 2026 public launch will provide the first large-scale operational data for Glydways’ ATN technology.
