Bendix, Aeva Advance 4D LiDAR Truck Safety Program

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems and Aeva are developing a 4D LiDAR-based active safety system for Class 8 mass-production trucks, expanding a partnership aimed at deploying advanced collision mitigation at high volume.

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems and Aeva are jointly developing a 4D LiDAR-based active safety system for Class 8 mass-production trucks, a North American segment that turns over roughly 300,000 new heavy trucks each year. The development program folds Aeva’s 4D LiDAR sensors and perception software into Bendix’s future collision mitigation solutions, expanding a collaboration the two companies first announced last year. Bendix Fusion, the company’s flagship advanced driver assistance system, is available across most major Class 8 OEM platforms and gives the partnership a route to deploy the new sensing capability in high-volume production.

Highlights

  • The program integrates Aeva’s 4D LiDAR sensors and perception software into Bendix’s future active safety and collision mitigation systems for Class 8 mass-production trucks.
  • Bendix is targeting a North American market of approximately 300,000 new Class 8 trucks sold annually.
  • Bendix Fusion, available across most major Class 8 OEM platforms, provides the scalable production path for the LiDAR-based sensing.
  • Bendix and Aeva describe the effort as one of the industry’s first 4D LiDAR-based programs aimed at commercial-vehicle active safety.

Scaling LiDAR Into Production Trucks

The agreement extends a partnership the two companies opened last year, when they set out to bring Aeva’s sensing platform into Bendix’s active safety roadmap. The new program moves that work toward mass production, pairing 4D LiDAR sensors with perception software to feed Bendix’s collision mitigation systems for high-volume Class 8 trucks. Aeva’s 4D LiDAR detects velocity and position simultaneously, according to the company, data the partners expect to sharpen performance in critical driving scenarios.

Bendix frames Fusion as the deployment vehicle. As the company’s primary ADAS offering across most major Class 8 OEM platforms, Fusion gives the program a scalable path to put LiDAR-based sensing into production trucks rather than test fleets. The companies describe the effort as one of the industry’s first 4D LiDAR-based programs targeting commercial-vehicle active safety.

The collaboration reflects a wider move toward LiDAR for both higher levels of autonomy and driver assistance, where richer perception data can support safety performance. Aeva has been pushing the same sensing platform into other vehicle development programs as it works toward series production.

What Bendix and Aeva Said

Mike Tober, chief technology officer at Bendix, tied the program to the company’s existing relationship with Aeva. “We’re excited to expand our work with Aeva through this program as we continue advancing safety technologies for commercial vehicle fleets,” he said. “Aeva’s 4D LiDAR provides capabilities that can improve system performance in critical driving scenarios, helping support the next generation of collision mitigation solutions that perform more effectively across a wider range of real-world operating conditions.”

Mina Rezk, co-founder and chief technology officer at Aeva, cast the agreement as a move toward volume production. “This program represents an important milestone in our collaboration with Bendix and a significant step toward mass production of a first-of-its-kind LiDAR-based driver assistance solution for commercial vehicles,” he said. “By combining Aeva’s 4D LiDAR with Bendix’s industry-leading safety platform, we are positioned to deliver next-generation LiDAR-based solutions that enhance safety and performance for commercial vehicle fleets at scale.”
