Aeva, Daimler Truck Expand LiDAR Partnership

Aeva and Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) are expanding their partnership to accelerate the scaled production of Aeva’s 4D LiDAR technology for autonomous trucks. This collaboration aims to advance the commercialization of self-driving vehicles by integrating advanced sensing systems into series production.

Key Highlights

  • Aeva and Daimler Truck North America are strengthening their collaboration for the series production of Aeva’s 4D LiDAR.
  • Aeva plans to establish production capacity for up to 200,000 LiDAR units annually in North America.
  • The first Freightliner Cascadia trucks equipped with Aeva sensors are now operational on Texas highways.
  • DTNA is providing additional funding to support Aeva’s path to series production.

Advancing Autonomous Trucking Technology

Building on their existing relationship, this expanded agreement designates Aeva as the production LiDAR supplier for Torc Robotics, an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG. The collaboration has already achieved a significant milestone with the deployment of the first autonomous-ready Freightliner Cascadia trucks featuring Aeva’s 4D LiDAR sensors on public roads in Texas. This development is a crucial step forward in Daimler Truck’s vision for safe and scalable autonomous transportation.

To meet the growing demand, Aeva intends to significantly increase its manufacturing capabilities. The company plans to build out its North American production capacity to support up to 200,000 LiDAR units per year. This increased volume will serve multiple customers, including Daimler Truck, as they move toward the production of vehicles with advanced autonomous applications. As part of the agreement, DTNA will provide additional non-recurring funding to help facilitate Aeva’s expansion and readiness for series production.

Soroush Salehian, Co-Founder and CEO at Aeva, stated that the company is proud to deepen its relationship with DTNA and support its efforts to bring safe autonomous trucks to the market. He noted that the investment accelerates the delivery of high-performance sensing capabilities essential for autonomous freight at a commercial scale.

The Role of 4D LiDAR in Autonomy

LiDAR is a critical enabling technology for autonomous driving. Unlike traditional LiDAR, which uses laser pulses to measure distance, Aeva’s innovative Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) 4D LiDAR technology utilizes a low-power continuous laser beam. This unique approach allows for the simultaneous measurement of both range and velocity with high resolution at distances up to 500 meters. This capability is vital for enabling new levels of safety and automation, particularly at highway speeds.

Joanna Buttler, General Manager of Product Strategy and Market Development at Daimler Truck North America, commented on the strengthening collaboration as both companies move closer to series production. She emphasized that the performance, reliability, and scalability of Aeva’s 4D LiDAR make it a key component of DTNA’s strategy to deploy safe, reliable, and efficient autonomous trucks. This partnership marks another significant step in Aeva’s mission to deliver next-generation perception technology and in Daimler Truck’s commitment to transforming the future of freight transportation.
