Einride, a technology company specializing in digital, electric, and autonomous freight solutions, has achieved a historic milestone by successfully operating a cabless electric autonomous vehicle across an international border without a human driver. The freight delivery for PostNord traveled from Sweden to Norway, marking a significant leap forward for the future of autonomous transportation.

Overcoming Cross-Border Challenges
Autonomous international vehicle operations present significant hurdles, including different national regulations, inconsistent road infrastructure, and complex customs procedures. This achievement demonstrates Einride’s ability to overcome these barriers through its integrated ecosystem.
The operation utilized the company’s advanced hardware and software, including the purpose-built cabless vehicle, the proprietary Einride Driver autonomous system, and a Control Tower platform for remote fleet management. To handle customs tasks normally managed by a human driver, Einride’s systems were integrated with Norway’s Digitoll digital customs solution, allowing goods to be declared in advance for a seamless border clearance process.
A Milestone for the MODI Project
This cross-border demonstration is a key component of the MODI project, an initiative co-founded by the European Union. The project aims to enable the safe rollout of heavy-duty autonomous transportation across various market applications. The successful crossing accelerates the introduction of Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) solutions, which are central to improving the transport and logistics industry.
Henrik Green, CTO and General Manager for Einride Autonomous Technologies, stated that the company is dedicated to extending its capabilities to showcase how autonomous technology can enhance transportation safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
Collaborative Effort in Logistics Innovation
The autonomous crossing was a joint effort between Swedish and Norwegian partners, including the Norwegian Customs (Tolletaten), Statens Vegvesen, Sintef, Q-Free, Trafikverket, and Østfold kommune. The operation was conducted on behalf of PostNord, a leading logistics provider in the Nordic region.
May-Kristin S. Willoch, Head of Environment & DPO at PostNord Norway, noted the company’s commitment to exploring innovative solutions. She emphasized that the achievement demonstrates how digital and autonomous technologies can reshape the future of transport, reduce emissions, and improve safety, heralding a new era for the logistics industry.
