Zoox has taken a major step forward in launching its autonomous ride-hailing service, rolling out its robotaxi on the streets of San Francisco. This follows recent expansions in Las Vegas, marking significant progress in California and Nevada. The company, committed to reshaping urban mobility, is now testing in the vibrant SoMa neighborhood of San Francisco, with initial rides available exclusively for Zoox employees.
Key Highlights:
- Robotaxi operations now active in San Francisco, marking Zoox’s second commercial market after Las Vegas.
- Testing focuses on San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, initially not open to public riders.
- Expanded geofence in Las Vegas, now covering The Strip and surrounding areas to enhance autonomous capabilities.
- Early rider program in Las Vegas will start in 2025, offering select individuals a chance to experience Zoox firsthand.
Zoox’s phased approach means initial testing in San Francisco will be concentrated in the SoMa area. During this period, rides will be exclusive to Zoox employees to help refine the experience before expanding the geofence to more neighborhoods. “Zoox is the only company driving a purpose-built robotaxi on public roads without traditional manual controls,” said Jesse Levinson, Co-Founder and CTO. This new deployment follows successful operations in Foster City and Las Vegas.
The Zoox robotaxi is designed without traditional manual controls, setting it apart from other autonomous vehicles. The company has spent the past several years validating its AI stack in multiple cities to prepare for a larger robotaxi deployment. As testing progresses, Zoox plans to expand the operational area in San Francisco and offer rides to the general public in the future.
In Las Vegas, Zoox is pushing towards welcoming its first public riders in 2025. The robotaxi now operates in a larger geofence that includes The Strip, known for its complex driving environment with multiple lanes, high pedestrian activity, and challenging intersections. This expansion will allow Zoox to continue improving its AI and prepare for broader commercial service.
