Zoox, Inc. has addressed a critical software issue in its Automated Driving Systems (ADS) by issuing a recall for versions released before April 17, 2025. This recall was prompted by a flaw that could cause the Zoox vehicle to misjudge the movements of another vehicle, potentially leading to crashes. The problem occurred when another vehicle approached perpendicularly and stopped, but the Zoox system incorrectly predicted its path, increasing collision risks.

The software glitch was most evident when Zoox vehicles traveled at speeds above 40 mph. In such cases, if a vehicle slowly emerged from a perpendicular driveway and halted, the ADS might assume it would keep moving into the Zoox vehicle’s lane. This error could lead the Zoox vehicle to plan an unsafe path, unable to adjust in time to avoid a crash.
Zoox acted quickly to resolve this. By April 17, 2025, the company updated the software across all affected vehicles on public roads, enhancing the ADS’s ability to accurately interpret traffic scenarios. The recall stemmed from a collision on April 8, 2025, in Las Vegas, NV, involving an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi and a passenger car. No injuries occurred, but Zoox paused driverless operations to investigate, resuming only after the update was fully implemented.
As Zoox owns and operates its entire fleet, no external owners or dealers required notification. This swift action underscores Zoox’s commitment to safety, ensuring its autonomous vehicles now better handle complex driving situations with the updated software in place.
