WeRide, a global leader in autonomous driving technology, has launched fully driverless Robotaxi trial operations in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant advancement in smart mobility for the Middle East. This initiative, the first of its kind in the region, involves a fleet of WeRide Robotaxis operating on public roads without safety drivers, starting this quarter. The company is also expanding its service to new areas, enhancing accessibility in Abu Dhabi’s dynamic urban landscape.
Key Highlights:
- First driverless Robotaxi trials in the Middle East, launched in Abu Dhabi.
- Expanded service to Al Maryah Island and Al Reem Island, alongside existing routes on Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and to Zayed International Airport.
- Holds the UAE’s first national license for autonomous vehicle testing and operation, granted in July 2023.
- Partnered with Uber in December 2024 for the largest commercial Robotaxi service outside the US and China.
- Plans to introduce commercial driverless rides in summer 2025, pending regulatory approval.

The expanded service now covers Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi’s financial hub, and Al Reem Island, a bustling residential area. These additions build on WeRide’s established network, operational since 2021, which connects key locations like Yas Island and Zayed International Airport. Jennifer Li, WeRide’s CFO, emphasized the company’s leadership, stating, “This milestone showcases our technological maturity and moves us closer to mass commercialization of Robotaxis.”
WeRide’s achievements in the UAE, including securing the first national license for self-driving vehicles in 2023, underscore its role as a pioneer in autonomous driving. The recent partnership with Uber further solidifies its presence, offering a robust commercial Robotaxi service. With operations in over 30 cities across 10 countries, WeRide continues to drive innovation in mobility, logistics, and sanitation through its versatile WeRide One platform.
