WeRide Inc., a global leader in autonomous driving technology, has been chosen as the technology provider for an innovative autonomous driving pilot project in Switzerland. Funded by the Canton of Zurich and Swiss national railway SBB, and managed by the Swiss Transit Lab (STL), the project will showcase WeRide’s cutting-edge Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving technology. The initiative highlights WeRide’s expertise and commitment to advancing intelligent mobility solutions in Europe.
Key Highlights:
- Autonomous fleet launch timeline: The pilot will begin with two autonomous vehicles in mid-2025, expanding to up to 12 vehicles by 2026.
- Service area coverage: Initial operations will serve Otelfingen, Boppelsen, Hüttikon, and Dänikon, with plans to extend to Buchs, Dällikon, and Regensdorf.
- Booking platform: Residents can book rides through an app provided by ioki, a leading on-demand mobility solutions provider in Europe.
- Long-term operation: The fleet will operate in a fully unmanned mode for up to five years, providing valuable insights into integrating autonomous solutions into public transportation.
The pilot aims to address limited transportation options in Swiss suburban areas by complementing the existing public transit network. Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide, stated: “The launch of the Swiss public transportation service pilot project demonstrates WeRide’s commitment to expanding autonomous driving solutions in Europe.”
Switzerland’s extensive rail network connects cities and towns, but suburban areas often face transportation challenges. This pilot project, supported by SBB, the Canton of Zurich, and STL, leverages WeRide’s autonomous driving expertise to enhance local travel efficiency while exploring the broader application of intelligent transportation solutions in Europe.
This initiative marks WeRide’s third European project within eight months. Previously, the company launched Europe’s first commercial autonomous minibus at Zurich Airport and provided an L4 autonomous shuttle service during the 2024 French Open in Paris. These milestones underscore WeRide’s growing influence in the European market and its readiness for global commercial deployment.
