WeRide Inc. has launched its Robobus autonomous shuttle service at Zurich Airport in collaboration with Flughafen Zürich AG and Swiss Transit Lab (STL). This marks a significant milestone as the first commercial autonomous bus shuttle project at a European airport. The Robobus, accommodating nine passengers, will operate along a dedicated route connecting key airport facilities, beginning service in the first quarter of 2025.

Key Highlights:

  • First commercial autonomous bus shuttle at a European airport, serving Zurich Airport employees along a fixed route.
  • The Robobus accommodates nine passengers and operates between gate 101 and gate 130.
  • Service launch planned for Q1 2025, with initial operations including a safety driver.
  • Partnership with Swiss Transit Lab ensures smooth operations and compliance with safety and data protection standards.

The initiative builds on WeRide’s success in Europe, including its autonomous shuttle service at the 2024 French Open in Paris. Flughafen Zürich AG also collaborates with other major airports, such as those in Brussels and Amsterdam, exploring autonomous vehicle technologies.

WeRide’s autonomous driving technology has undergone extensive validation in over 30 cities across seven countries. This deployment highlights the company’s ability to overcome challenges posed by Zurich Airport’s complex operational and climatic conditions, demonstrating the maturity and reliability of its systems.

The Robobus follows WeRide’s Robotaxi, which conducted route mapping at Zurich Airport earlier this year, indicating potential for broader applications of autonomous solutions in Switzerland.

“WeRide possesses a fully developed and thoroughly tested technology, meets all of the legal and safety requirements in place at Zurich Airport, and guarantees that it will meet the data protection requirements set out,” Flughafen Zürich AG stated.

WeRide’s ongoing efforts to advance autonomous mobility solutions underscore its commitment to innovation and sustainability in public transportation. Future plans include transitioning the Robobus from safety-driver operations to remote monitoring, further enhancing operational efficiency.

This deployment aligns with WeRide’s mission to provide low-carbon, efficient mobility solutions, solidifying its presence as a global leader in autonomous driving technology.
