Waymo’s First Responder Program has received independent validation from TÜV SÜD, a global leader in safety testing and certification. This achievement makes it the first autonomous vehicle emergency responder program to be reviewed and confirmed in alignment with industry best practices. Waymo has prioritized collaboration with emergency responders as part of its approach to deploying its fully autonomous Waymo One ride-hailing service, ensuring safe and effective interactions in critical situations.
Key Highlights:
- TÜV SÜD validation: Confirms the program meets the SAE AVSC-I-01-2024 guidelines for emergency response protocols.
- 15,000+ responders trained: Police, fire, and EMS personnel from over 75 U.S. agencies have participated in Waymo’s training sessions.
- Collaboration with public safety leaders: Engages with associations like the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Fire Chiefs.
- User research-driven improvements: Features like advanced emergency vehicle detection and real-time hand signal response developed with input from responders.
Comprehensive Training and Industry Leadership
Since 2018, Waymo has emphasized robust emergency preparedness, beginning with its First Responder Guide created in partnership with public safety officials. This guide has evolved into a full-scale First Responder Program, which is led by a team of emergency response specialists. Training sessions, outreach efforts, and collaborations with safety organizations ensure that Waymo continues to refine its processes as the autonomous driving landscape expands.
Francesca Favarò, Head of Safety Best Practices at Waymo, noted, “Waymo’s First Responder Program is a fundamental part of Waymo’s approach to safety as we expand our ridership.”
TÜV SÜD’s Role in Safety Validation
The program’s TÜV SÜD review confirms its compliance with industry standards for safe interactions between Waymo’s autonomous technology and first responders. Bijoy Bhaskaran, Director of Mobility, North America, highlighted Waymo’s commitment to safety, saying, “Through this first-of-its-kind assessment, we confirmed Waymo’s First Responder Program is consistent with industry standards.”
Refining the Waymo Driver for Emergency Situations
Waymo’s collaboration with first responders in San Francisco and Phoenix has directly influenced the development of advanced capabilities for the Waymo Driver, including:
- Improved detection of emergency vehicles and sirens.
- Real-time responses to first responder directions.
- Secure protocols for emergency manual vehicle disengagement.
These enhancements have been tested in closed-course environments to optimize the Waymo Driver’s performance in real-world scenarios.
Ongoing Engagement and Future Expansion
Waymo’s Emergency Response and Outreach Manager, Rob Patrick, leads the First Responder Ambassadors team to gather feedback from first responders as Waymo expands its services to more communities.
