Waabi, a Toronto-based startup, is leveraging generative AI and NVIDIA technology to revolutionize autonomous trucking. By integrating NVIDIA DRIVE Thor and DRIVE OS, Waabi aims to launch fully driverless operations next year, promising a scalable, safe, and cost-efficient solution for the industry.

Key Highlights:

  • Waabi announced collaboration with NVIDIA at GTC in March.
  • Utilizes NVIDIA DRIVE Thor and DRIVE OS for AI-powered autonomous trucks.
  • Combination of Waabi World simulator and Waabi Driver reduces on-road testing needs.
  • Deep collaboration with NVIDIA accelerates AV development.
  • Milestones include $200M Series B funding, partnership with Uber Freight, and new Dallas trucking terminal.

Waabi’s innovative approach combines two generative AI systems: a “teacher” called Waabi World and a “student” named Waabi Driver. Waabi World is an advanced simulator that trains and validates Waabi Driver, an end-to-end AI system capable of human-like reasoning. This synergy minimizes the need for extensive on-road testing, ensuring a safer and more efficient solution.

“We are excited to have a deep collaboration with NVIDIA to bring generative AI to the edge, on our vehicles, at scale,” said Raquel Urtasun, founder and CEO of Waabi. Generative AI enhances AV development by enabling the creation of foundation models that operate unsupervised, learning from real-world observations and actions.

Waabi’s collaboration with NVIDIA marks a significant milestone, including a $200 million Series B funding round with NVIDIA’s participation. The startup is also working with Uber Freight and has launched its first commercial autonomous trucking routes in the U.S. Additionally, Waabi opened a trucking terminal near Dallas, centralizing its operations in Texas.

“What we’re building for autonomous vehicles — combining generative AI-powered simulation with a foundation AI model purpose-built for acting in the physical world — will enable faster, safer, and more scalable deployment of this transformative technology around the world,” Urtasun noted on the company’s website.

Waabi is set to redefine the future of autonomous trucking with its innovative use of generative AI and strategic collaboration with NVIDIA, positioning itself at the forefront of the AV industry.
