Volkswagen and Uber Launch Autonomous Fleet

Volkswagen and Uber have unveiled a strategic partnership to bring autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles to the Uber platform, starting in Los Angeles. This collaboration is set to reshape urban transportation by introducing a fleet of all-electric, self-driving vehicles over the next decade, blending Volkswagen’s manufacturing prowess with Uber’s ride-hailing expertise.

Key Highlights

  • Volkswagen and Uber join forces to deploy autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles on Uber’s platform.
  • Initial rollout begins in Los Angeles, with testing in late 2025 and a commercial launch in 2026.
  • MOIA, a Volkswagen AG brand, provides the autonomous driving technology.
  • Plans aim for thousands of fully autonomous, electric vehicles across U.S. markets by the 2030s.
  • Human operators will monitor early phases to ensure safety and refine the system.
  • Partnership underscores a shared vision for the future of autonomous mobility.

Deployment Details

The initiative kicks off with testing in late 2025, followed by a public launch in Los Angeles in 2026. The ID. Buzz AD, an all-electric reimagining of Volkswagen’s classic Microbus, will feature MOIA’s advanced autonomous driving solution. This includes a self-driving system and a Mobility -as-a-Service (MaaS) ecosystem designed for seamless operation. During initial stages, human operators will be present to oversee performance and safety, ensuring the technology meets rigorous standards before full autonomy.

A Shared Vision

Christian Senger, CEO of Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility, stated, “This partnership with Uber accelerates our mission to shape mobility’s future, combining our manufacturing expertise with cutting-edge technology.” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi added, “We’re excited to launch in Los Angeles next year, advancing autonomous transportation together.”
