The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a preliminary evaluation into the Lane Keep Assist (LKA) system in VinFast VF8 vehicles (model years 2023-2024). This investigation follows complaints from 14 vehicle owners regarding malfunctions in the system, which allegedly causes improper steering inputs, difficulty detecting road lanes, and challenges for drivers to override the system. The evaluation aims to assess the scope and potential safety risks associated with these issues.
Key Highlights:
- Vehicle Models Involved: 2023-2024 VinFast VF8
- Number of Complaints: 14 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs)
- Main Concerns:
- LKA system activates in error
- Difficulty detecting lane markings
- Improper steering inputs
- High effort required to override by the driver
- Potential Safety Impact: Increased likelihood of crashes or injury due to improper system functionality
- Investigation Opened On: September 10, 2024
- Affected Vehicle Population: Estimated at 3,118 units
Details of the Investigation
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation under PE24025 to evaluate potential defects in the Lane Keep Assist system. The investigation aims to determine the frequency, severity, and possible safety risks. The complaints specifically highlight the system’s inability to accurately detect lane markings and provide correct steering inputs. In some cases, drivers reported significant difficulty in overriding the system, potentially increasing the risk of crashes.
Failure Report Summary
According to the ODI’s data:
- Reported Incidents: 14 total complaints
- Crashes or Fires: None officially confirmed
- Injuries or Fatalities: None reported
Although one vehicle owner (VOQ 11585817) alleged a crash related to the LKA system, the ODI has not found sufficient evidence to confirm that the crash was caused by the system malfunction.
Next Steps
The investigation will continue to assess whether the Lane Keep Assist system in VinFast VF8 models poses a significant safety hazard. Findings will determine if further action, such as a recall, is necessary to address the potential defects. Further information and updates on the investigation can be accessed at NHTSA.gov.
This is an ongoing inquiry, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
