Viasat, Inc., a leader in satellite communications, has officially joined the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA). As the first satellite communications provider in the association, Viasat aims to bring direct-to-device (D2D) expertise to support connected transport technologies, including autonomous vehicles and predictive safety systems.
Key Highlights:
- First satellite provider to join the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA).
- Supports the development of C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything), enabling real-time vehicle communication.
- Brings direct-to-device capabilities to advance autonomous and connected vehicles.
- Collaborates with global automotive and technology leaders to enhance connected transport applications.
The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) brings together a wide range of automotive and technology companies to create a unified connectivity ecosystem known as C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything). This platform allows vehicles to interact in real time with their surroundings, including other vehicles, road infrastructure, and mobile networks. The goal is to enhance travel efficiency, reduce pollution, and improve road safety through cooperative systems.
C-V2X technology could play a pivotal role in connected mobility by enabling vehicles to communicate with their environments—be it pedestrians, cyclists, or road infrastructure. It can also transform supply chains, making them more responsive and efficient, while enhancing safety for all road users.
5GAA’s current projects include developing support for fully autonomous vehicles, real-time supply chain tracking, and predictive maintenance alerts to prevent vehicle breakdowns. Connectivity is a critical enabler of these projects, and Viasat’s expertise in satellite technologies will help bridge the gap in areas lacking terrestrial network coverage.
Satellite and Cellular Convergence
The convergence of satellite and cellular technologies is advancing rapidly, thanks to the 3GPP Release 17 standard. This standard outlines how devices—including phones, vehicles, and industrial machinery—can connect directly to satellites without dedicated hardware. Viasat is currently working on a direct-to-device ecosystem, collaborating with chipset manufacturers, mobile network operators (MNOs), OEMs, and solution providers. These technologies are expected to enhance services like emergency calls, breakdown assistance, and collision detection.
Viasat is well-positioned to offer global standards-based direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity using spectrum already licensed for mobile satellite services. This approach means existing mobile network operators can integrate satellite connectivity without needing terrestrial frequencies, ensuring more seamless and reliable communication.
Industry Insights
Kevin Cohen, VP of Direct to Device Partnerships at Viasat, emphasized the importance of the partnership: “With a longstanding history in providing critical safety services in the air and at sea, and our continued innovation on direct-to-device connectivity, joining the 5GAA is a natural fit for Viasat. By utilizing already licensed L-band spectrum for mobile satellite services, vehicles could roam between space and ground network connectivity.”
Johannes Springer, Director General of 5GAA, added: “Viasat’s leadership in satellite-based connectivity, particularly their innovative approach on direct-to-device technology, will significantly enhance the 5GAA’s efforts to build a resilient and future-proof C-V2X ecosystem. Their expertise will help us explore new frontiers in vehicle-to-everything communication, especially in areas with limited terrestrial network coverage.”
