In November 2024, TIER IV, a leader in open-source autonomous driving systems, will debut its groundbreaking robotaxi service in Tokyo. Targeting areas and times underserved by traditional taxis, this service will start with proof of concept (PoC) tests in Odaiba, a district in Tokyo Bay. TIER IV aims to gradually expand its service to cover Tokyo’s major districts by 2025 and the entire metropolitan area by 2027, fostering a harmonious coexistence with the existing mobility ecosystem.

Key Highlights

  • Launch Date: November 2024
  • Initial Area: Tokyo Bay area of Odaiba
  • Expansion Plans: Major districts by 2025, entire metropolitan area by 2027
  • Goal: Harmonious coexistence with existing mobility services

TIER IV has developed multiple classes of reference designs for autonomous driving (AD) systems based on Autoware. These reference designs define suitable vehicle models and environments, known as operating design domains (ODDs), where AD systems are tested and validated using TIER IV’s software platforms.

For technical validation, the robotaxi reference design, integrated into the JPN TAXI vehicle model, has demonstrated sufficient safety and availability, even in heavy-traffic areas. This design has also been successfully applied to public transportation networks and in-factory logistics nationwide.

Building on these achievements, TIER IV is preparing for the commercialization of its new robotaxi services. The upcoming PoC tests in Odaiba will pave the way for public access by November 2024. Ongoing discussions with transportation operators aim to ensure the seamless integration of these robotaxis into the existing mobility ecosystem.

Looking ahead, TIER IV plans to extend its robotaxi services, maintaining safety and availability standards comparable to conventional taxis. Initially focusing on key areas within Tokyo before expanding citywide, TIER IV is committed to advancing open innovation in the autonomous driving sector.
