TIER IV and Nihon Kotsu are partnering to boost AI development for autonomous driving through a large-scale data-sharing initiative. Starting in July 2024, the collaboration will focus on collecting data from vehicles equipped with TIER IV’s data recording system (DRS).
Key Highlights:
- Partnership aims to scale AI development for autonomous driving.
- Data collected from vehicles equipped with TIER IV’s DRS.
- Efficient data collection and sharing through the Co-MLOps Platform.
- Expansion plans to create a comprehensive dataset by 2025.
TIER IV, a leader in open-source software for autonomous driving, launched the Co-MLOps (Cooperative Machine Learning Operations) initiative in 2023. The company demonstrated a proof of concept at CES 2024, showcasing data collected with partners from eight global regions. The partnership with Nihon Kotsu aims to verify the performance of DRS and expand the dataset for AI development.
DRS Overview
TIER IV’s DRS includes automotive-grade LiDARs, high-resolution cameras, and electronic control units (ECUs). This setup ensures comprehensive and precise data collection, crucial for AI development in autonomous driving.
Co-MLOps Platform Efficiency
Data uploaded to the cloud-based Co-MLOps Platform undergoes quality checks, anonymization, and tagging. Active learning frameworks prioritize annotations, enhancing AI performance and accelerating the MLOps process.
Shinpei Kato, founder, CEO, and CTO of TIER IV, stated, “The data collected through this collaboration will have a wide range of applications, significantly enhancing the accuracy of autonomous driving AI while advancing efforts toward the deployment of robotaxis and the mass production of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).” Ichiro Kawanabe, Director of Nihon Kotsu, added, “Nihon Kotsu will contribute to improve the safety of automated driving and its implementation by using our 96 years of operational know-how.”
Future Plans
TIER IV will lead data collection in Tokyo through the end of 2024, aiming to create an annotated dataset exceeding 200,000 frames. Looking ahead, TIER IV plans to expand its fleet and gather a diverse dataset across various regions, fueling advancements in autonomous driving technology. The company will also explore mass production of DRS and broaden its network for future initiatives.
