TIER IV has announced its AI Pilot system received Level 4 certification for powering an autonomous bus service in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture. This milestone represents the first-ever Level 4 certification in Japan, allowing the autonomous bus to operate at speeds of up to 35 km/h along public roads shared with pedestrians and general traffic.

Key Highlights:

  • First Level 4 certification in Japan for public roads.
  • The bus will operate between Shiojiri Station and Shiojiri City Hall.
  • Built on Autoware open-source software, AI Pilot is compatible with various vehicles.

TIER IV’s AI Pilot system integrates Autoware open-source software, sensors, a computer, and an in-vehicle infotainment system, adaptable for different vehicle types. The recent certification aligns with TIER IV’s commitment to supporting the Japanese government’s initiative to expand autonomous vehicle deployment nationwide. This new certification follows a previous Level 4 certification at GLP ALFALINK Sagamihara in October 2023.

TIER IV is also working to create a certification framework that supports partners developing autonomous driving systems, accelerating the widespread rollout of autonomous driving solutions.

“In Japan, it is increasingly difficult to sustain regional public transportation amid population decline and an aging society,” said Shinpei Kato, founder and CEO of TIER IV. “The Level 4 certification in Shiojiri represents a major step forward in these efforts.” TIER IV is committed to continuing research, development, and proof of concept (PoC) tests to bring autonomous solutions to a wider audience.

Shiojiri City has been a key partner in this venture since 2020. Mayor Takashi Momose stated, “We have been partnering with TIER IV to explore autonomous driving services and conduct PoC tests. With the recent certification, we are nearing the implementation of Level 4 autonomous driving on public roads.” The mayor also highlighted their goal to use Level 4 autonomous buses to improve safety and revitalize public transit in the area.

The citizens of Shiojiri City are enthusiastic about the advancements, expressing their eagerness for the autonomous buses to become part of their daily commute. “It’s an honor for us as citizens to use an autonomous bus that represents such advanced technology and dedication,” one resident commented.

Level 4 autonomous driving in Japan refers to vehicles operating fully without a driver under specific conditions on public roads. The AI Pilot system, a registered trademark of TIER IV, includes the Autoware platform, which is similarly recognized as a registered trademark of the Autoware Foundation.
