The Swiss Federal Council has introduced a comprehensive ordinance aimed at facilitating the integration of automated driving technologies into the nation’s transportation network. By establishing a clear legal framework, this move is expected to enhance road safety, optimize traffic flow, and create valuable opportunities for both economic stakeholders and transportation service providers. The new ordinance will officially take effect on March 1, 2025.

  • Flexible legal framework enabling the integration of new and emerging automated driving technologies.
  • Three recognized automated scenarios, including motorway pilots, driverless routes, and automated parking applications.
  • Cantonal discretion for route and parking approvals, supported by federal guidance and advisory groups.
  • Mandatory type approvals ensuring that automated vehicles meet comprehensive safety and efficiency standards.

In spring 2023, the Swiss Parliament enacted a partial revision of the Road Traffic Act (SVG) to support the rapid introduction of advanced automated driving options. This legal adjustment sets the stage for broad deployment of current and future autonomous systems on Switzerland’s roads. The Federal Council’s subsequent ordinance refines the legislative framework, providing clear operational parameters for implementing automated driving solutions.

Under these regulations, motorway pilots will grant drivers the ability to let go of the steering device once activated, freeing them from continuous traffic monitoring. While the automated system handles primary driving tasks, the individual behind the wheel must be ready to assume control if prompted. Beyond private use, the ordinance allows for the deployment of driverless vehicles monitored by control center operators. When a situation proves too complex for the automated system to handle independently, these operators can suggest suitable driving maneuvers, offering a practical approach to tasks such as transporting goods or bridging the “last mile” in passenger transport.

Additionally, the ordinance permits automated parking without a driver’s presence in designated garages and parking areas, pending approval by cantonal or municipal authorities. Such spaces may be evaluated by reference to federal guidelines or through consultation with advisory bodies.

All automated vehicles will be subject to a rigorous type approval process, ensuring that manufacturers demonstrate how ongoing road safety and traffic efficiency are maintained throughout the operational lifespan of the system. This meticulous oversight by the cantons aims to bolster public confidence in emerging autonomous technologies, supporting a seamless transition toward safer, more efficient, and forward-looking mobility solutions.
