Stellantis has unveiled STLA AutoDrive 1.0, its first in-house-developed autonomous driving system, introducing Hands-Free and Eyes-Off (SAE Level 3) capabilities. Designed for convenience and safety, STLA AutoDrive allows drivers to temporarily disengage from driving tasks at speeds up to 37 mph (60 km/h), even in low-light and challenging weather. This launch marks a major step in Stellantis’ technology strategy, complementing STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit to enhance vehicle intelligence and user experience.
Key Highlights:
- SAE Level 3 automation: Hands-Free and Eyes-Off driving up to 37 mph in stop-and-go traffic.
- All-weather functionality: Operates at night and in light rain, aided by an automated sensor-cleaning system.
- Level 2 and 2+ modes: Includes Adaptive Cruise Control and lane centering for higher-speed driving.
- Scalable and evolving: Built for global markets with over-the-air updates and future capabilities like 95 km/h (59 mph) operation and off-road automation.
- User-friendly design: Simple activation with a button when conditions allow, with constant environment monitoring.
STLA AutoDrive is tailored for urban commuters, enabling drivers to watch movies, read, or work during traffic jams. Ned Curic, Stellantis’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, emphasized, “Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority. By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”
The system utilizes an advanced suite of sensors to monitor its surroundings and maintain smooth, human-like driving behavior, adjusting to merging traffic and maintaining safe distances. It also adheres to regional driving regulations and ensures drivers remain ready to retake control when needed.
As part of Stellantis’ commitment to evolving mobility, STLA AutoDrive offers a glimpse into the future of safe, intelligent, and comfortable driving while aligning with the company’s Dare Forward 2030 plan to become a carbon net zero mobility tech company by 2038.
