Rivian’s Gen 2 R1 vehicles now feature Enhanced Highway Assist, a hands-off driving system. This marks the debut of advanced autonomy capabilities on the Rivian Autonomy Platform, covering 135,000 miles of highways across the U.S. and Canada. The system integrates cutting-edge cameras, radars, and machine learning for safer, smarter driving. Expansion plans include off-highway roads within the next year, with more updates to follow.
Key Highlights
- Hands-Off Driving: Enhanced Highway Assist lets drivers remove hands from the wheel while staying attentive, active on major highways.
- Tech Powerhouse: Features 11 cameras, 5 radars, and a compute module with 200 trillion operations per second.
- Future-Ready: Current hardware supports upcoming hands-off/eyes-off features planned for 2026.
Rivian’s in-house platform stands out with its multimodal sensor suite, offering 360º visibility and top-tier resolution—the highest in North America. Its overlapping radars ensure reliability in tough conditions like fog or darkness. The onboard compute module, a supercomputer in its own right, processes data in real-time, making Rivian vehicles exceptionally responsive. James Philbin, VP of Autonomy and AI, notes, “Everything on our Gen 2 roadmap is capable with the hardware on our vehicles today.”
The system’s early sensor fusion combines camera and radar data into a unified model, outperforming the industry’s common late fusion approach. This boosts accuracy and performance, enabling vehicles to navigate complex scenarios—like lane changes or reacting to traffic—with ease. Rivian’s machine learning models, built on transformer architectures, further enhance decision-making by giving vehicles a deeper grasp of their surroundings.
Flexibility defines Rivian’s tech. The ML models adapt to various sensor setups, ensuring scalability across current and future vehicles. Off-board, massive datasets from the fleet refine the system via larger ML models, all while safeguarding privacy through anonymization. Monthly software updates keep the platform evolving, with plans to extend hands-off driving to more roads later this year.
Looking ahead, Rivian aims for a hands-off/eyes-off feature in controlled settings by 2026, prioritizing trust and safety. The company’s mission? Reduce driving stress and reclaim time for customers. With a robust foundation and ambitious roadmap, Rivian is steering toward a new era of autonomy.
