Nissan Motor Co. has unveiled cutting-edge autonomous driving (AD) technology in Yokohama, successfully demonstrating Japan’s first driverless test vehicle navigating complex urban roads. This breakthrough aims to commercialize autonomous mobility services, addressing critical transportation challenges such as driver shortages.
Key Highlights:
- First driverless test on public roads in Japan’s urban areas.
- Based on Nissan Serena, equipped with 14 cameras, nine radars, and six LiDAR sensors.
- Enhanced AI delivers improved recognition, behavior prediction, and smooth operational control.
The advanced sensor setup, strategically mounted on the Serena’s roof, allows for improved environmental detection compared to previous iterations. Utilizing artificial intelligence, the system accurately predicts behaviors, enhancing the vehicle’s response in real-time and ensuring safe, seamless travel through busy city streets.
To guarantee maximum safety, Nissan engineers have extensively tested a variety of scenarios along the demonstration route, incorporating an emergency stop function and redundancy systems.
Since 2017, Nissan has been consistently advancing its AD technology through rigorous testing. The company plans to deploy approximately 20 vehicles for service demonstrations in Yokohama between fiscal years 2025 and 2026. Leveraging insights from these trials, Nissan intends to officially launch its autonomous mobility services by fiscal year 2027, collaborating closely with municipalities and transportation operators.
This initiative will receive strong support from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and Yokohama City. These entities are actively involved through the Level 4 Mobility Acceleration Committee, working to foster innovative autonomous transportation solutions.
Nissan remains committed to refining its technology and expanding mobility solutions globally, utilizing insights gathered from international research collaborations in Silicon Valley and the U.K. This strategic approach positions Nissan as a frontrunner in the autonomous driving sector, enhancing mobility freedom worldwide.
